This is an odd one. When i try to play a mkv files i get an error message saying please make sure library points to right location.

Direct show unspecified error- Code 0x 80004005

MC is seeing the files eg. if i do find on disk external or in Media Center, it points to the files. I get the same error message even when i double click on the files in windows explorer, so it isn't a file location error.

Only seems to happen with mkv files. Seems very odd. Anyone got any idea what's going on?

Are you using the latest build? If yes, do you have the new Red October system enabled?

Could you check the file (or some files if they the contain data in various formats) with MediaInfo and post the report.

I have an MKV file with VC-1 encoded video that does not play when Red October is enabled. I get the same error message as you.

Yes, using latest build. And yes using red october.
Here's the media info of one of the files..though i stress that none of my mkv files play. Also had this problem with the last released build so it may not be a red october thing.

Just got exact same error message trying to play an avi file, though unlike mkv files, MC is able to play most avi files.

Anyone got any ideas. I'm baffled. I don't think it's red October related as it started with 16.0.87 which was pre Red October. However builds previous to this were OK.

Also probably not database related, as I get same error message when i try to play mkv's with MC from explorer.

I have an idea... How are your Options -> Video -> Audio for Video settings configured?  This was changed for build 87.  It isn't quite part of Red October, but is part of the same "set" of changes.

In particular, what Connection type and Playback device are selected?  Also, just for good measure, is VideoClock enabled?

The MKV file you listed isn't anything odd, and should probably be able to playback properly with Red October.  I'm thinking something is borked in the bitstreaming settings.  I'm really not sure, but if you have both:

Playback Device: same as audio
and
Connection type: Bitstream

I think it might not work, depending on what you have selected in the Audio setup section.  The basic idea of "same as audio" is that it wants to route everything through the Audio DSP, so that it can do room correction and whatnot on the audio output.  But then you can't be bitstreaming, obviously, because the DSP needs decoded audio to do it's magic.  So, for Bitstreaming, for now, I think you want to explicitly choose your audio output device as the Playback device in Audio for Video.

Otherwise, if this doesn't apply, and you still can't get it to work, try it with it set to PCM.  You might have to hook up some headphones or something to the soundcard if you don't have any analog outs.  But if that works, it could provide Matt et all with a nice clue to work on a fix.

Glynor - you are a genius. The problem was with Bitstreaming..no matter what playback device I had selected. When i changed it to PCM everything is working as normal. So looks like I can't use bitstreaming for now. Anyway, I'm just grateful to get some sort of functionality back at the moment.

Thanks so much for your help :)

Incidentally, problem wasn't solved by upgrading to build 99. I tried that first but the problem was still there. So it seems the problem was introduced in build 87.

Yeah... They changed a bunch of the bitstreaming code for b87.

Can you report the details of your setup so that they can work on fixing it for the next time around?  Bitstreaming IS working for me on my HTPC, for the record... I have an AMD Radeon HD 6850 graphics card and I'm outputting everything over HDMI.  I know there was some other problem report for people using SPDIF though (but I don't remember the details) so we should work to try to figure it out.

It might have to wait until after the Red October stuff settles down, but they'll get there, I'm sure.

Sure. My set up is Win 7 64 bit. Using a ATI Radeon HD3650, QuadCore AMD Phenom X4 9750.

My set up varies depending on whether I'm watching video on the PC or via HDMI to Onkyo receiver. This bitstreaming problem occurred just using MC for video playback on my main PC. Never even tried to see what would happen outputting to Onkyo.

Has this issue been addressed yet?  Just loaded MC (111) on my rebuilt Media Center box and can't get any MKV's to play.  Seems to be the same issue.  Before I waste a lot more time trying to figure it out, is MC 16 just broken for bitsreaming for now?

Bitstreaming is working.

If you continue having a problem, please start a new thread with details.

Yep.  Bitstreaming works fine here on a few systems.

I still have this problem, so maybe some others will too. MKV files will not play if bitstreaming is on.
