DLNA Renderer doesn't respect Volume settings
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:27:23 am »

Hi...   I'm new to JRiver Media Center, so perhaps I'm missing something or making a mistake, but I'm hoping someone can help me.

MC playback as a DLNA Renderer is much louder than manual or webremote playback.

First, I have all my volume leveling setup just fine in MC.  Everything works and plays back at the correct volume as specified by the replaygain tags in the files.  MC version 16.0.87

I have MC setup to be configured as a DLNA renderer, meaning I'm using a DLNA controller to tell MC to play files, and I expect MC to play them and the sound to come out of MC (not the remote device.)

It does that - the remote device can browse the MC library and all, and can play tracks.  However, the tracks do not play at the correct volume (they are generally much louder.)  If I play a track using the MC interface it plays at one volume level, then if I immediately stop it and issue the play command from the remote device, MC starts playing it at a much higher volume level.

If I play it using the MC WebRemote functionality, it plays back at the correct volume level, just as if I was operating MC manually.  It's only through DLNA that there's a problem.

This really makes the DLNA control not very useful.  Am I missing a configuration setting somewhere, or is this a bug or limitation in the DLNA feature?

Searched all over, including through old versions of MC, but couldn't find anything on this issue.  Thanks...

If a file is sent to Media Center from a DLNA server, it probably won't have Replay Gain.

What is the server in this case?  If it's Media Center, you could enable conversion to PCM with Replay Gain in Options > Media Network.

Yes, MC is both the server and the renderer.  I am playing files that are local in MC's database.  There is no external server, just the controller (iphone with no media files) and Media Center.

There is no "conversion to PCM with ReplayGain" option that I can find.  However, there is a option in Media Network->Add/config DLNA Servers-> Audio
There's an "Always Convert option" that if you select allows another checkbox called "Volume Leveling"

I think that this checkbox is only used when you are sending media from MC to an external renderer, which is not the case here.  Regardless, I have tested, and the state of this checkbox has no effect in my situation.

When remotely controlled by a DLNA controller, MC plays it's local audio files much louder than when it plays the same files as a result of local control.

Thanks for your reply though...

To make sure I understand, Media Center is playing from its own server?

It might be a nice feature enhancement if the DIDL contained the runtime GUID and file key so that playback could detect this case and use the library entry so that Replay Gain would be available, and the file request wouldn't go through the TCP stack.

Well, I don't know what MC is doing internally, whether is it actually making a connection to it's own DLNA server, or if it's smart enough to know not to.

All I am doing is going to Options->MediaNetwork->Advanced
and checking DLNA Server and DLNA Renderer.

I then go to my DLNA controller app on the iphone, browse through Media Center's Library, pick what I want to hear and tell it to play.

It's a means to play music on my HTPC when the TV is off.

Sounds like you're suggesting that this is a scenario where the MC server and renderer act independently, so the left hand doesn't know the right.

Are you saying in this usage case MC ignores volume settings and there's nothing else for me to do about it?

Thanks for your advice!

I see that perhaps I should have posted this over in the Media Network board... I took that as more of getting MC to work with other renderers or servers as opposed to internal playback.  Sorry if this was off-topic!
