HELP!!! (Again) Can't load MJ!
« on: May 31, 2002, 07:28:48 pm »

When I tried to load MJ 8.0.289, Install Wizard said it performed an illegal action and froze.  I rebooted and the same thing.  So I unloaded MJ and tried reloading.  Still an illegal action!  I now can't get any version of MJ to load!  I would get my sys stats from MJ, but I can't get any version to install.  This is a major delema!  The install wizard details are:

I am running Windows 98
Pentium II, 400 MHz

I have had no problems with Intall Wizard with any other program, I hope someone has a suggestion that can help with this.

ThanX,
Chico

Check the other similar messages here, Chico.  I think it may be a Windows temp file problem.  Could also be disk space.

Thanx, guys.
I wound up installing Windows and MJ 8.0.289 to finally install!  Next Page
However, For some reason, it didn't install the Lame encoders.  Do I risk a reinstallment of MJ again to see if it loads the Lame encoders or is there another way to get the Lame MP3 encoder into MJ as the default encoder?  I don't like using it as an external encoder.

JimH..  Good guess... The disk space thing was what started all my trouble in the first place.  I crashed my HD by over filling it and wound up having to buy a new HD and reload everything.  If it wasn't for CD writers, I would have lost my whole music library, but I just lost a couple hundred songs that I hadn't backed up yet.  I've spent the last three to four weeks trying to get back up to close to where I was before the crash.  If nothing else, I got a much larger HD out of the deal.

Chicoself, I remember when you had the problems... Thanx for the info.  Unfortunately, I don't know Spanish, so I don't know what you said at the end of your reply.  I got the name "Chico" because when I was a young hippy, everyone thought that I looked like Freddy Prince.  The name just kinda stuck with me all these years.

So thanks to all, and if you know how I can the lame encoder that's supposed to come with MJ, I would appreciate it.

Chico,
Good to hear you're back on two feet.  Just download the plug-in from the plug-ins page.  If you're going to have a problem (and I really doubt it) you'd be better off to find out now.

Thanx soundsabound and JimH,
I'm actually still limping along, but it's getting better.  I managed to get the Lame encoder DL'd and installed (thanx for the link, soundsabound).
I really don't know what is going on with my system.  If I try to reinstall MJ, the installer gets that stupid illegal operation again.  Fortunately, I did get v8.0.289 installed and running before the the problem reared it's ugly head again.  Haven't had much opertunity to give it a thourough workout yet, but, as of now, all seems to be OK.
I'm about to up my SDRAM from 128 to 384Mb, then, hopefully, I'll be able to afford an upgrade my OS and leave 98 behind.  (Maybe by Christmas...  Next Page )

KingSparta, I do have a copy of 2000 pro, would it be worth my while to try and install it?  I'm not sure what the best OS would be for my system, needs, and buget.  I've heard that 2000 pro is geared more towards networking, which wouldn't help me much.

Again, Thanx for your help.

Running Windows 98, but feel like I'm being left in the dust sometimes, ya know?
I guess I'll hang on to it untill I can't stand it any longer.
Thanks.

If you do System Info in MJ under Help, does it say

Windows 98 SE?

or Windows 98?

SE is way better.

Chico,

If you have a copy of 2000 Pro, why not install it? You have enough memory to handle it, and the benefits of a newer OS should outweigh any reason to keep 98 installed. 98 is ok, but if I had a more recent version of Windows I would certainly try it out. I'm sure there are settings that maybe don't apply to you, networking, administration, blah blah blah, just don't use them.

JimH,
I'm running straight 98 on my home PC and 98SE on my work PC.  It is the home PC that I keep having problems with (of course).

MachineHead,
Thanks, I am seriously considering it.  I guess I'm a little hesitent because it isn't an original disc (if you know what I mean).
