Options for 88.2kHz playback with Sonicweld Diverter 2496
« on: July 14, 2011, 11:41:31 am »

I recently picked up the last remaining 2496 (old model) Sonicweld Diverter. Unfortunately, it does not support 88.2kHz playback and I have several albums at this sample rate. In DSP Options, I see that I can have Media Center resample anything less than 44.1kHz or greater than 48kHz to any sample rate I choose. It says "no changes are made if the same rate is selected as the input". I'm not exactly sure how to interpret that. What I want to know is, if I select a 24/96 file for playback with the sample rate set to 96kHz in DSP options, will the player do any conversion? What I want to achieve is 44.1kHz files played at 44.1kHz, 88.2kHz files upsampled to 96kHz, and 96kHz files played back at 96kHz. Will those settings allow for this?

The current settings won't allow for what you want to do. You should backup your original 88.2 files and then convert the files using Media Editor to 96K. If you go to Start >  All Programs > JRiver Media Center > Media Editor you can open the files individually and convert them using Tools > Format Converter. When you save the file, just use the drop down box to select which format you want to encode them to. I just tested a file and it took 30 seconds for the complete process (open, convert, save).

I would not recommend resampling critical material with Media Editor.  The resampler is not the same audiophile-grade resampler used in Media Center for playback.

Just pick the option "Less than 44.1 or greater than 48" and pick 96 KHz.  44.1 and 48 will not get resampled.

"No changes are made if the same rate is selected as the input" means literally that nothing is done when the file is 96 kHz and the output is 96 kHz. The sample rate converter would not have anything to calculate anyway (1 sample in => 1 sample out).

The setting "Only sources less than 44,100 Hz or greater than 48,000 Hz => sample rate 96,000 Hz" will work as you want. 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz will stay intact and 88.2 kHz will be resampled to 96 kHz.

EDIT

As Matt said, he posted while I was writing my reply.

Yes, Matt said that 44.1 and 48kHz will not get resampled, but I was also concerned with 96 as it is greater than the 48kHz specified. I think I understand now that 44.1,48, and 96kHz will undergo no changes. Only 88.2kHz will get re-sampled to 96kHz which is what I want.
