swapping i3 with i5, any precautions?
« on: July 29, 2011, 05:14:00 pm »

I want to swap the CPUs in my two computers. One is a Gigabyte Z68 with i5-2500, the other is a Asrock H67 with i3-2100. I think I would be better served with the i5 in the ASrock machine since this one is connected to my TV (the other I use to rip my movies and store them "the server"). This way I can probably run RO-HQ without stuttering (the i3 is just a little too weak I think).
Can I just power down the computers and swap them with nothing else being done - or do I need to delete the processor in device manager before shutting down - and/or anything else? Do I need to do anything in BIOS?

There's no need to do anything in Windows, other than possibly reactivate due to the hardware change.

I'd run a temperature monitor (like HWMonitor) and stress test for a while to make sure the cooler is seated well and taking the heat off the CPU.

A tool like CPU-Z is also nice for double-checking that the clock rates and voltages are what you expect.

I would double check that....

mobo bios is at the latest available
intel chipset drivers are are the latest available (use the command line switch -overall to be sure)
intel HD graphics drivers are at the latest available

In general, make sure that your hardware device drivers are fully up to date before the swap.
