Theater View on TV without cables: possible?
« on: August 14, 2011, 03:16:53 pm »

Okay: I've got MC 16 and I've got a superfancy Philips TV which can act as a kind of mediacenter. I can play my MC-library on that TV through UPnP.

However, I hate the user interface of the TV.
And, however I never use it on my pc, I love the Theater View of MC.

So... Is it possible to use MC through my TV without any cables? So through UPnP or so?

With UPnP or DLNA, the interface is whatever the consumer electronics manufacturer has designed.  MC has no control of it.

To get what you want, you will need to use a PC connected to the TV.  Mine is a PC connected to a receiver which is connected to the TV.   This is commonly called a Home Theater PC or HTPC.  The sound and video quality are well worth the trouble.

Then all you need is a Media Center Remote or Gizmo on an Android to control it.

Another way to do it is to use a wireless HDMI device like this:

I have no experience with such a device though, so cannot vouch for how good it would be. You'd also need a wireless mouse and keyboard in your TV room with sufficient range to control your PC, wherever that is in the house.

Really though, a small discrete HTPC like Jim described would be a better way to go.

Yes it would be. Does your TV do wireless UPnP, or is there an ethernet cable connected to it?

It is wireless connected, but has got an ethernet-connection as well, so I could use that one instead if that would be of any help in my case.
Would it?

The important point, re. UPnP is whether or not the particular model of TV supports it, and how well.

The Ethernet connection, wired or wireless only affects speed, wired being faster and more reliable.

The point I was trying to ascertain is the extant of his aversion to cables. If there were a Cat6 cable going into the TV, or willingness to add one, then a single HDMI from an HTPC might also be acceptable (with hidden cat6 going to HTPC).

No, I've got nothing against cables. On contrary - I distrust wireless compared to cable!
However, my p.c. is pretty far away from my TV - therefor, as for an HDTV-connection concerned - I have to use wireless, although the thing FitBrit mentioned is interesting too.

I split discussion about Ethernet over Powerline to a new thread.
