Album View: Version 0.3.6b is now available
« on: May 16, 2002, 11:12:38 pm »

Here you go friends:

http://www.zippy.eclipse.co.uk/mjav.exe

And here's the changelog:

Fixed issue where wheel mouse support crashed MJ
Fixed issue where thumbnail captions were not being generated correctly
Fixed issue where scrollbars were not sized to contents
Do not cache images via LoadPicture ... instead cache data and convert to images as needed.   This saves A LOT of memory usage but slows down usage
Scrollbar background now matches workspace colour
Added ability to disable wheel mouse support

Have fun.

Unbelievable slow, takes ages (minutes and minutes), to read my 8.000 files, step 2 and 4 ....

If I turn off "On Plugin First Access" "Scan the Media Jukebox database", All is very fast but I have no data then.

Can't it keep somewhere it's already scanned data and just do a refresh whenever I ask for it in stead of each time MJ restarts ?

bennyd,

It shouldn't be any slower than any previous version with the exception of painting thumbnails.

Can you tell me more about what options you have enabled, e.g.:

 internal images enabled
 prefetch all on database scan
 external image directories used
 show completed albums

These will all affect the performance of AV.

Also what speed is your machine?

Rhino

Caption problem re showing ogg etc fixed. Great - and so quickly.

Processing speed a little slower but well worth it.

Great job on the Latest release Rhino,
Memory usage in task manager with AV installed for MJ is like 20Mb which is the same as without.
Thanks for fixing the scroll bar size so fast.
One humble request,
because your using VB this should be really fast to add.
U made the plugin obviously and so know fully how it works, I'm still not too sure about alot of the features.
I know u dont have time for a help file and would much rather work on the program which is fair enough,
but could you spend like 10 mins and just add tool tips to everything?
In VB I know that's really easy to do and it'd let us all know the full power of your plugin that much more.

Thanks

Nila,

Tell me what is not descriptive enough and I'll change the text.

You'd better be quick though as I am going to release either tonight or tomorrow and start on V2.

P.S.  I have speeded up inital scanning of the MJ database.

Good job on the speeding up.

Just general tool tips, I remember when I made a VB program, they took like 10 seconds to add for each option.
I just clicked on the little box in the bottom right where you set properties and added them Next Page
k - lemme give some more specific examples though.
1. Sync mode (what is it?)
2. Sort tracks by position (they're sorted by album/artist aren't they? whats this about?)
3. Hot tracking? What's that?
4. Prefetch on database scan? - fetch what? AV already fetches the images so what's it prefetching?
5. Aloud !artist! type thing's that can be used for captions
6. MediaJukebox internal image (there's a separate option for disabling internal images so what's this)
7. Fonts/Colour screen? Is this implemented cause all the options here are grayed out for me.

As you can see, I use the basic features of AV and love them but have no idea what the extra options are.

P.S. - Cant wait till v2.
Dying to have you implement your own db as the power of this plugin can then really take off fully and you can make AV something that turns me on more than most women. Extra sort options (eg  genre/artist) etc will also be hugely welcomed).

Keep it up!! Next Page

Maybe you could add a direct link to APE code (open source) and release the whole package, independently from media jukebox.  King Sparta could contribute his tagging program. This AV package could become the tag that wagged the dog!

Hey Rhino,
quick question,
U know how it no longer caches it due to the memory problems?
I know your working on the next version right now, and this is maybe something you could implement in it.
if it's going to keep doing caching the images then I personally would LOVE an option for it to create thumbnails of my images and keep them in it's own dir so that it could then load them up again faster when changing tabs as some of my images are like 200kb whereas the thumbnails would be around 10kb and so I'd imagine that it'd be a LOT faster for it to change tabs if it was simply reading a 10kb file instead. Also, it wouldn't have to be resizing them to display them so that too I'd imagine would speed it up.

I'm not sure fully how your implementing it of course so this might be a pointless idea that makes no difference.

Also, I'm aware that you can change the thumbnail sizes so this might be a problem when the thumbnails are changed but realistically I think most people do like I do. Play with the settings until they get it the size they want then leave it at that size permenantly. And after an image size change it could possibly ask if they wanted to remake the thumbnails or simply use the originals instead or stretch the thumbnails - whatever Next Page.

It was just an idea I had that although would take a bit of time to originally make all the thumbnails, this is usually done once to begin with then simply done with new albums as they are added.

Most people dont mind a one off slow task as long as it's then fast with every day use.

Just an idea. Feel free to say it's a crap one.

Good luck with the new version.

Nila,

I have put different caching back in and it's a lot faster that 0.3.6b.

For v2 I am planning to do something similar to what you are suggesting.
When I build my DB it will store the appropriate album thumbnail image within it although it will always store the original size as I personally like (and use) the sizing facility.   I am even considering taking it further so it will dynamically size the thumbnails to take advantage of the available screen real estate.

Also I will be releasing v1 in about 30mins ... and just for you I put in tooltips ... but not quite what you imagined Next Page

Damn, shame about no release.

Cant wait to see these tool tips, I'm hoping they're gonna be a 3d cartoon character that pops up and starts talking to me and telling me it can do.
One that I can use the mouse to slap around like in the game Black and White.
If that's a bit too fancy for you then I dont mind just a simple voice recognition solution where I ask my monitor a question and a 3/4 naked britney spears pops up and does a quick strip for me then replies with the answer.

Just something simple like that though, you dont have to do anything tooo elaborate.
