I'm downloading now to see if it will run in a VM, out of curiosity.

This review deems Windows 8 fairly clumsy, an amalgam between a desktop and tablet OS, ala Windows '95 revisited.

Running fine in Parallels Desktop here.

I'm sure it works under VMWare too.  The earlier Developer Preview did.

Works fine in Virtualbox too.  Virtualbox 4.1.8 has pre-sets for Win8.

Oh, what a mess.  After years of Windows telling me to get junk of my desktop, the new interface loads my "desktop" with rows and columns of useless junk like "Store".

I'm off now to learn how to get off a particular screen.  I'm pretty sure the next task will be to delete the Win 8 preview, but I'll remain an optimistically neutral pessimist.

I can't speak to the upcoming Microsoft clone of it, but I can say that the Mac App Store is ANYTHING but useless.  I was skeptical, but I completely love it.  So easy to purchase things, and so easy to support my relatives using it.

I can just tell them:  You can buy anything you want from the Mac App Store.  When it tells you about updates, just do them.

Even better?  Anything I buy from it, I automatically get to use on ALL of my Macs (akin to the JRiver licensing terms).  I buy stuff there for that reason alone.  I buy something on my laptop, and by the time I get to work the next day, it is already installed and waiting for me on my Mac Pro.  That's nice.

Looks like it runs well on Win7. Have not tried media playback yet, but everything looks fine. Standard view as well as theater view.

It sure would be nice with some works to integrate it better in Metro however. Perhaps some icon data stream like playing now info for this tiles?

Somebody should get to work on this app right away and have it ready for the microsoft app store when Win 8 goes gold RC
