Buffering Problems Increasing
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:00:10 am »

Hi,

Over the last week I've been experiencing more problems with tracks stopping for "Buffering" during playback than previously - from never to once per album.  I didn't change any settings to cause this.  I've tried changing the buffering setting and toggling play from memory instead of disc without improving the situation.

My collection is made up of ALAC and AAC (most matched through itunes match) and notice that the problem happens more (if not exclusively) with the AAC files.

Anyone experiencing similar problems? Anyone able to offer me a solution?

I'm running the latest JRMC17 build on Windows 7 with up to date updates.  I had the settings to match computer audiophiles recommended settings (http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/JRiver-Media-Center-17-Detail)

Thanks,

James

Are the files on your PC or on a network drive?

Try adjusting the buffer down.  100 ms, for example.

If you use a virus checker, it could cause such a problem if it checks every file all the time.

Thanks for the reply

The files are on my PC hard-drive.

I have the buffering set at 100ms (recommended) and the pre-buffering at 6 secs (recommended).  The notes in JRMC17 suggest moving these figures up, not down, should lead to more stable playback.

I do have a virus checker - Kasperky - I'll try to figure out if it scans each file.  I've already added JRMC17 to the 'trusted' program list.

from the PC to music fidelity v1 USB/SPDIF converter, to peachtree idac, to virtue sensation m901 integrated amp.

nothing's changed in the rest of the set up from when JRMC17 was working fine, what has changed is getting a 'buffering...' message on JRMC17 where the song details usually are.

Strangely it's worse with the imatched aac files - which read at 64bits/44.1hz when playing back, I find the 64 figure surprising.

I started experiencing similar problems since the update to the current version, last week.
I did not change anything else to my set up. Files are local 16bit/44Khz .flac files. The problem is difficult to reproduce, and seems to occur randomly. Opening a file from the library view takes around 10 seconds (usually more) with a 'buffering' message appearing in the song details.

Please report the full version number.  There are two "current" versions.  One on the download page (Stable) and one on the forum (Latest).

It's version 17.0.122

I've also noticed that it tends to affect early tracks on the album, but not all albums and not exclusively early tracks.

After more listening I can also confirm I've had no more problems with ALAC files, only the ACC matched files (with the weird 64-bit display).

I've also set the virus checker (Kasperky PURE) to pause file scanning when JRMC17 starts, and the problem persists.

Those controls don't always work.  Uninstalling the virus checker and rebooting is the only way to know for sure.
