Sonos and MC17
« on: June 25, 2012, 09:51:00 am »

I just got a Sonos controller and speaker, as a wedding gift.

Is there a way to control it from MC17 or Gizmo ?

I searched the forum but I didn't find anything.

Thanks

Sonos runs its own protocol, so I don't know of any way to connect MC to it.

Surprising enough, if I use the SW AllShare (from Samsung) on my PC, I can see and control Sonos.

In fact I can see my MC17 server, select its playlists and send them to the Samsung Smart TV or to Sonos.

I am not able to send them to both at the same time (in sync), but at least I can use the smartlists from MC17.

I guess AllShare understands the Sonos protocol (along with DLNA)

Cool. That's the same thing that Whitebear does with the Squeeze devices and DLNA.

I got a SONOS system a few months ago (thanks to a small inheritance from my aunt). I have a Connect hooked up to my home theater system, two Play 5's (one in the kitchen, one in the living room), and two Play 3's (one in the bedroom and one in the office). I have to honestly say that these are the greatest music/media related purchase I have ever made. I've tried so many ways over the years to easily get music networked in the house and this is the first time it's worked flawlessly. (BTW, I put the blame primarily on the hardware, not MC....) In the several months I have had the system going (in two separate houses now), there have been maybe 3 or 4 glitches in playback. It's rock solid!

I was saddened, however, that I would not have access to my awesome (and painstakingly curated) MC Smartlists. I started by going to some of my smartlists and exporting a whole bunch of them as pre-programmed playlists that SONOS could access. While that was okay, it would require going back every so often to create some new playlists.

After reading this thread, I went and checked out AllShare, and sure enough it could see my MC library as well as my SONOS players. I could now push my playlists to the SONOS system. But I find the AllShare pretty clunky and these days with the SONOS I do most of my music selection through mobile devices (iPad, iPod and Android).

This lead me to the Twonky app which does a much better job of sending my MC smartlists to my SONOS players, making me VERY happy!

I mention all of this in the hope that my friends at JRiver see that this can be done and perhaps find a way at some point to get MC to recognize/play-to SONOS devices via zones or whatnot....

According to what I see on the interwebs, there is some sort of DLNA support in the Sonos, I'd assume that's why you can push to it with allshare.
Does it show up as a zone in Playing Now in MC?
If so, what happens if you try to push a track to it?

No it does NOT show as a Zone in Playing Now

But clearly All Share is able to connect to it and send music over to Sonos

None of my SONOS players show up in MC though Twonky and AllShare can see them and send music to them.

Can one of you run device spy from the developer tools for uPNP and send or attach a screen shot of the tree under the sonos?
You'd be looking for something that contains AVTransport, ConnectionManager and RenderingControl.
Thanks.

Don't know if this is what you need:

Quote

Parent UDN   urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:MediaRenderer:1
Service ID   urn:upnp-org:serviceId:AVTransport
Service URL   http://192.168.2.19:1400/xml/AVTransport1.xml
State variables   65
Version   1.0

Methods   3
Parent UDN   urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:MediaRenderer:1
Service ID   urn:upnp-org:serviceId:ConnectionManager
Service URL   http://192.168.2.19:1400/xml/ConnectionManager1.xml

There seem to be a lot of sub-items in the tree.

Ok, that looks good.
Would you right-click on the Sonos device in device spy and do "get device xml" and post it here?
You do have all three DLNA boxes checked under Media Network Options -> Advanced, right?

You mean for Server, Renderer, Controller? Yup, all three checked.

One more question, in device spy again, what's the "base url" for the sonos? Note that it may or may not have a trailing slash.

After reading this thread, I went and checked out AllShare, and sure enough it could see my MC library as well as my SONOS players. I could now push my playlists to the SONOS system.
Using Allshare or Twonky, can music that is pushed to Sonos be synchronised with your other Sonos players? (You presumbaly have to group your players first using a Sonos controller). Or will Sonos only synchronise music when Sonos itself invokes the playing of the music?

Well, I'm just using Twonky now and I can only send from Twonky to one player. Once it's playing I can group the players so that it's synced throughout the house. Twonky will only send to a single player and not a group (from what I can tell).

Once a playlist is playing through the SONOS I can't use the SONOS controls to skip tracks and the songs don't show up in the SONOS queue, so I can't edit the playlist while it's playing. That would be useful to do.

I'm thinking of the possibilities - sync'd DLNA devices at last!  But...

When you group players, they appear as a group and not as individual players?  So to achieve whole house audio, before playing you have to ungroup them, start playing a track, and then group them, then to pick another track you have to ungroup, start playing, and then group again?  Therefore it's only really practical with large playlists?

Anything going on in development (of MC18...) to allow MC to push to SONOS or add them as zones?

Just checking....

Hi,

It appears that MC is now seeing my sonos (connect amp) as a zone and it can play tracks.

Its a bit temperamental and seems to crash MC whenever it comes across a file it can't handle (e.g. above 48,000Hz etc); also the audio path is showing that its not using the jriver audio engine at all, I'm assuming that MC is just acting as a dlna controller for the sonos.

Any chance that now we can see the sonos zones that MC play to them through its own audio engine?

Regards

You can probably use MC's conversion for DLNA to always send a format that will work.

MC, in this case is serving the files to the Sonos.  It's up to the Sonos to play them.

Jim,

I've set that up and it seems to be working. Still a bit of slow down when changing track position and a bit slow to start, but that could very well be my hardware.

Anyway good job. I can now get rid of my crappy DAC and cables that i had been using to allow me to control my sonos through JRiver.

Cheers

Evening all,

I'm thinking of investing in a couple of sonos speakers and utilising the power of jriver over my wireless network, I have a few questions I was hoping somebody could help with,

Do you use the sonos ipad app or JRemote to control zones/music from mc18?
Are you able to send separate music streams to each sonos speaker via zones within mc18?
Interested to know any general thoughts on its day to day operation with multiple users.

look forward to any response.

regards

Something just changed with the latest MC 18 update.  Now all of a sudden my Sonos zones show up in MC 18 as Playing Now zones.  I had always seen them listed in the library section.

I can group the zones through the Sonos app.

The Sonos zones can also be played to through the JRemote app.

The first advantage to me is that my MC playlists are now easy to play all over the house through Sonos.  Interesting.

I assume you just upgraded from the previous stable to the current stable?
Is it possible that it was the Sonos firmware that changed instead?
If they showed up in the library section it because we see them advertised as a media server. If they show up in the zones they are advertising as renderers. Some renderers can be servers too if for instance they have usb mass storage capability or they are like MC which does both.

It was definitely the MC update to 18.0.94 that caused the change.  I noticed it first on one pc that I had just updated.  I checked another pc and the Sonos zones still weren't listed in the Playing Now section.  As soon as I updated that computer to 18.0.94 the Sonos zones became visible in Playing Now.

So far I'm getting rock solid play from MC 18 through all Sonos zones.  I don't know who to thank so I'll just thank everyone in general in MC world.  It's a little late tonight to test everything, but I still haven't been able to get the Sonos zones to link perfectly with the MC players.  Every zone plays, but the Sonos and MC zones aren't quite in sync.  I'll test that more tomorrow.

Just to add a bit more to address thesmartmoney's questions.  I can play different tracks from MC 18 to each Sonos zone.  In my case I'm more interested in playing the same track in every zone, but different tracks in different zones are playing flawlessly for me.

So far I prefer controlling things from the JRemote app.  JRemote shows full info and artwork for what's playing in the Sonos zones, along with the playlist or album queues.  The sonos app just shows the artist and title of the current song with no artwork or queue listing from MC.

It's really difficult to get linked DLNA zones to sync perfectly. They are not very deterministic in their response times.

Very interesting. I was using MC 18.0.106 for a while and casually noticed that all six of my Sonos boxes were appearing in the playing now but didn't think anything of it. This morning on a whim I thought I would just try play something to one of them and much to my surprise it worked like a charm. VERY COOL I thought as someone else had mentioned I might have just achieve unity on my library and may be able to have my ratings, last played, etc. actually mean something as they are reading from one library. I was a bit busy so didn't investigate any further.

This evening I was playing around with MC and YouTube and discovered a problem playing YouTube videos on MC 18.0.106 so I went and changed my update settings and updated to 8.0.149 which is the most current (not necessarily stable) release. Fixed the YouTube problem like a charm. After watching a video in theater view on YouTube I thought I would come back to the Sonos thing again. They have disappeared from my playing now both on JRemote and in the Playing now section on the main screen.

So...

My questions are as follows:

1) What changed between these two versions that "broke" the Sonos from working?
2) Can I get it back?
3) Did I somehow accidentally change some setting that turns it on or off?
4) Is Sonos support official or as a by-product of DLNA stuff going on somewhere in my network? It would be great if it was official and even better if the library and particularly the play statistics were unified.

Thanks!

Thanks!
Make sure you have all three DLNA functions enabled in the Media Network advanced options section.
Do other renderers show up (do you have any others?)
There are are a lot of variables so it's a bit tough to know what happened. I'd suggest the current build if you haven't already tried it since there are some changes in the DLNA discovery code from the build you mentioned.
For further debugging you could install the "uPNP tools for developer" to see if the sonos devices show up without MC or other software running.

This happened to me with MC17 today! The Sonos boxes appeared and then I did something else and couldn't find the boxes again.  Can I stream to these boxes direct from MC17?  It would be a great help as MC 17is such a versatile good player.

We've had reports that Sonos now supports DLNA.

If they are Renderers, they will appear under Playing now.  Drag and drop audio files to them.

You might try MC18.  It may work better.

Works very reliably for me with v18.  Not so with my 1 box running v17.
