I just picked up one of these:

Sounds great, and I hope it is becomes part of my ultimate solution to replace my squeezebox radios and live the dream - conrolling all my zones via J River on a tablet.

I have a very large library of files (mostly FLAC) and your SW is the only thing out there that doesn't bog down when browsing the library - I'm a true believer.


So - my issue:
-I unpacked the speaker and set it up.  Very simple, one button press via WPS and it is connect to my network, and is identified as a potential media renderer.
-Starting with basics, I used Windows to PlayTo this device a few mp3 files just to make sure it was alive - worked fine. (Knew it was Windows certified).  I stopped playback.
-I then went to MC: told it to play a few mp3 tracks off the same album I'd just played.  
   -Got these errors:"There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA device. Double check your device, server, and network settings".  Pressed OK
   -Then immediately:"Something went wrong with playback".  Pressed OK
-MC shows the speaker as a zone, shows the tracks queued up, but gives those errors whenever I try to play.

I have previously controlled other renderers with MC - so I know my setup works.

Any thoughts?

You could try checking the sinkprotocolinfo (GetProtocolInfo) to see what it can play. MP3, while widely supported, is not required by the protocol.
(always converting to headerless L16 would then be your choice in DLNA server options).

Otherwise:

Right-Click on the Aris zone in "Playing Now".
Check out the two DLNA controller options.
Select "disable SetNext support"
try again.
If it still doesn't work, try
"Disable transport events"

If it still doesn't work, go here:

I sent the mp3s via PlayTo and they worked, so I assumed they are supported.

OK - looks like it might be a setup issue on my side.  When I rebooted everything to start clean and get a wireshark capture, the renderer wouldn't even show up.

My suspicion after much hair pulling:  The AUX input on the back of the speaker.  I plugged in an ipod to test it out at some point - and left the cable in.  I suspect this device ignores events while it has an input attached.

(Or some other voodoo - but it's working now).

Now streaming FLAC and MP3 perfectly.

On to the next issue.....their playback is not gapless..... I'm off to prod the Aperion folks.  The have SetNextURI implemented - just need to improve their FW.

Just to confirm, this is a proper DLNA Renderer?  The blurb keeps mentioning Windows 7 and 8 Play To, and the DLNA capabilities are hidden away in the small print, but as you are obviously proving, it is indeed a standalone DLNA renderer too?

You are correct.  I playback gapless material (live Pearl Jam concert official releases in this case), and there is a gap between tracks that is normally not present.


For the other people who asked.
1) Yes, it is indeeed a proper DLNA Renderer.
2) Sound quality is quite good at first evaluation - but I just got it and have 2 small children...so my critical listening time has been limited to date.

Hey guys - sorry I didn't see LINK's post until today - could have saved you some hair pulling.  I handle marketing at Aperion Audio.  The ARIS speaker switches input source to the analog jack when it senses a plug is inserted.  We did it this way so that a separate switch for source selection was not needed.  While I'm not the most technical, I can certainly get answers from our technical team if there is anything else you'd like to know about the ARIS wireless speaker - and yes it is DLNA certified. I'll let LINK and other owners describe the sound, because of course I could be biased

Welcome Ed,

Any chance you could get your tech guys to look at getting the firmware to support SetNextAVTransportURI in a fashion that allows gapless playback?
We see that your firmware advertises support for this function.
The purpose of  SetNextAVTransportURI is to allow the controller to send the next track URI to the renderer so that it can smoothly transition to the next track without the usual stop/new-url/play logic that DLNA uses in it's most rudimentary form.

There are some renderers that do this properly (most don't). When it does work properly, the renderer can start downloading the next track while the playback buffer is still being drained from the current track and then the device goes on to play the next track without closing and re-opening the audio device. This allows true gapless playback.
