I am having multiple problems ripping CDs. When I first imported my library from itunes I decided to begin ripping CDs in WAV format. I overwrote some of the itunes formats because I did not want two files of same music.

Then I spent a long time building playlists, smartlists & updating genres, correcting and improving my library. Subsequent to that I have decided to  re rip some CDs in APE format. This is where it gets bizarre. Some times, the rip will replace the music files I have in system. Other times, MC will add these other file formats to the same album, and lastly, some times MC will build a new album or have a different artist for the same album ( mostly using "&" instead of "and" in the artist name. What is going on?   

I would prefer not having to inspect for duplication every time I re rip a CD.

Oh yeah... and sometimes when I insert a CD, the music will start playing while other times the CD won't auto start.


 Like I said before, bizzarre with no rhyme or reason.

Ripping a CD is two.
The rip itself is transferring the content of the CD to a file on the HD in an audio format of your choice.
At the same time the tracks are tagged. This is done by looking up the CD in an internet database. This generates the tags like Album, Artist, Title etc.

As you have used iTunes, the internet database is Gracenotes.
In JRiver you are using YADB and FreeDB.
Obvious any tiny difference in spelling between these databases will yield e.g. a different artist like the "&" instead of "and".

If you look in Tools >Options > File location you will find a rule for audio files e.g. [Artist]\[Album]\
Obvious this depends on the values as returned during the rip by the internet database.
Any difference in these values will create a different folder.

Well this seems to make sense..... I have been inspecting the files as they have been ripping and it seems that if I have made any changes to the tags then MC will create a new file. Sometimes it is listed as a new album, sometimes it is just a different file under the same album. I will drill down and see if location differs.

hanks for the help Vincent. I am just over 30 days into MC and still learning a lot. I have been to your site and find it useful as well. Two other questions I have. When burning CDs, I had originally encoded for M4a format, then I read up some and figured I should be keeping them in WAV, but then further on it seems most folks encode to APE which comes in at around 850 bit rate rather than 1440. I know that I should re rip the M4a to APE to get better sound. As well, I think the APE file will convert faster to lower bit rate when I bring music over to my iPod. So should I keep the WAV files? or convert them to APE?

Lastly,  why is it that sometimes when I insert a disk it will start playing, and sometimes it will not?

My impression is that most rip to FLAC.
If you see a bit rate of 1440 (CDs) you have ripped to uncompressed lossless.
Ripping to FLAC or any other lossless compressed format like APE saves you some disk space.
It shouldn’t affect sound quality as long as it is lossless.

The problem with WAV is the support for tagging.
Wouldn’t be surprised if you transfer a WAV to any other device you will miss the tags.
If you use WAV make sure you have the plugin in JRiver installed.
