Cover art and tags modified without any reason
« on: October 09, 2012, 03:12:07 pm »

I maintain two copies of my music files, and I regularly use the rsync command between my reference music folder and my other copy (which I use with JRiver), in order to have two identical copies, and recently I noticed several differences  ? :

1) Some Folder.jpg files had been modified in the folder I use with JRiver.
(I don't embed cover arts in the Flac files, and use instead Folder.jpg files in the same folder as the albums.)
It seems that JRiver decided by himself to replace certain of my Folder.jpg files  :o !!
Sometimes the cover art it found is better than the one I used, and sometimes it's worse, but anyway, I certainly don't want JRiver to do that in the background, without me knowing it  >:( !

2) Certain Flac files had new tags that did not exist in the reference version.
It seems that the new tags were only "TOOL NAME" (with value "Media Center") and TOOL VERSION (with value "17.0.186").
Again, I don't want JRiver to put those tags in my Flac files without me knowing it  >:(.

What is very strange is that these changes were applied to just a few of my music files, and it had apparently no relation with the music I had played  ?.

So anyway, can somebody explain this strange behaviour of JRiver, and how to avoid it ?

MC won't replace your cover art if it exists.

Do you use a Synology NAS drive?

No : my music files are on regular external hard drives, but not NAS.

I am thinking of something : I sometimes used the command Cover Art > Rebuild Thumbnails, because it happened several times that I forgot to power on my external hard drive, and when I launched JRiver, because the files were not accessible, the cover arts were not showing. So, after having powered on my external hard drive, I used the above command in order to get back my cover arts.

You can turn tagging off with Options > General > Update tags when file info changes.

And you can configure Auto-Import to not get cover art when it's missing in Tools > Import > Configure Auto-Import.

Yes I thought about that, but I certainly didn't change the "TOOL NAME" and "TOOL VERSION" fields in the database (it seems that those fields are not even accessible in JRiver : I only noticed them when using the Mp3tag tool).

And you can configure Auto-Import to not get cover art when it's missing in Tools > Import > Configure Auto-Import.

I never use Auto-Import. I always use Import a single folder.

What about my suggestion about the Rebuild Thumbnails command ? (our posts seem to have crossed !).

Auto-Import is the name for the tool that handles any background library processing (cleanup, checking for changes, etc.).

This includes getting cover art for files without artwork, and analyzing Replay Gain.

Both can be configured in Tools > Auto-Import > Configure Auto-Import.

You can also disable background auto-import in Options, but I don't recommend this.

I also found the following thread about "TOOL NAME" and "TOOL VERSION" :

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=64227.msg429834#msg429834

So, I will try the following :
- Untick the option "Update tags when file info changes"
- Untick the option "Get cover art" in Auto-Import

I will let you know if the problem arises again.

Thank you for your help !
