Hello

I already bought a license for MC 18.
I have my MC 17 running without any problems now and would like to ask if I shall upgrade now, or wait until everything is fixed and stable.
Please let me know.

I don't think anyone can tell you as we don't know how you use it. You may run into an issue, you may not. It depends.

If you feel adventureous, try it out. Otherwise just stick with 17 and upgrade when it comes out of beta.

I use mc only for music, and in all those years, the first beta of the new version was as stable as the last of the previous.
I can not think of any program crash in the last 4 - 6 years remember, whether beta or stable

before installing a new version, I copy my database into a new folder DB18.
create a new folder backup18.
secure my database in mc17, and reload the main library, which I never use.
save my music-hd on a special-hd.

install mc 18, add my library from DB18 folder and restore my last backup from mc17 (because the settings).
change the backup folder to backup18.

so I can always switch back to the previous version - with the original library.
i check this and start several times mc17 - runs perfect.


as I said - I've never had problems. go back to previous version was never necessary.

anyway - before i start - i save all my data

I just updated to MC18 the other day. (had purchased license when first announced)

I use MC for audio only (flac) playback. install went smooth and zero problems so far.

...still have MC17 installed, but I can't see any reason whatsoever to go back.

The term Beta almost has no meaning in JRiver's development model.  Alpha and Beta are old development criteria, designed to lock down feature sets and to coordinate various activities such as documentation, testing, and scheduling.  With MC, new features show up routinely (so the concept of Alpha is meaningless) and new APIs appear throughout development, as do occasionally critical bugs (so the concept of Beta is essentially meaningless too).

When the general consensus of the development team and the beta testers says they're comfortable, that's about the best you're going to get.

It is fine to switch now and the upgrade is painless (well it was for me).  That said, if there is no current issue in MC17 that is fixed in MC18 or a new feature you want then there is also no rush.

I have just upgraded to MC18 leaving MC17 in place with no issues. doing no manual saving of libraries etc with zero problems and can use both 17 and 18.

I upgraded about two weeks ago after buying it on the special price early on. I had been a little hesitant because WAF is very important here.

We use it for audio and video - watch a recorded movie almost every night. Most usage is in Theater View directly from our HTPC to our 50" TV and also directly to our 5.1 power amps. The HTPC is also setup as a server to feed audio to our living room PC.

Thus far no problems, and certainly no regrets doing the upgrade. Also now I know we will always have the latest features.
