WAV file won't play on one PC but will on Another
« on: February 15, 2013, 08:32:16 am »

I have version 18.0.106 on two PCs, a Windows 7 (64) desktop and Vista Home Basic (32) laptop.

I ripped a CD (Eric Anderson, Best Of) to a Hard Drive as wav files. One track (track 5. Song to a J.C.B.) won't play with MC on the Vista laptop. It does play on Vista through Windows Media Player. On the Windows 7 machine it plays in MC and WMP. When I ripped this track there didn't appear to be anything wrong. This is the only track out of 30 CDs I've ripped sofar that doesn't play.

The error message that comes up says 'You may not have installed on your computer DirectShow filters for decoding the type of file you are trying to play. Please install appropriate filters and try again'.

It's fair to say my Vista machine has not been updated but I only use it offline for a specific purpose.

Of course I ripped the CD again but it made no difference.

Can anyone offer advice on this. The track itself is not important to me and I wouldn't miss it - it's just irritating that I can't play it and as it's early days in my PC music learning I wish to sort it out. I do hope to get a better PC set up in due course when I've learned more of the basics.

Did you rip with MC?

Check the settings under Tools/Options/Filetype.  Try "Automatic" for WAV.

I ripped with EAC.

File Types settings are the default settings which show (on both PCs) WAV Audio as Automatic.

Ripped with MC to WAV and FLAC. FLAC plays, WAV does not, as before.

I thought I'd update Windows Vista - you never know. Four hours and 200 plus updates later the deed is done.

Does the wav file now work? No! It still won't play, and with the same error message.

A bonus though is that Theatre View is now available (having got the latest Direct X drivers).

I'm not spending anymore time on this. I accept I can't play this track on my laptop but I intend to buy some more up to date box in due course when I hope this problem disappears.

Thanks JimH for your efforts.

We might learn something if we tried the same file on our side.

Could you make a copy of the file that won't play available to matt at jriver dot com using email, Dropbox, etc.

Thanks.

I've sent you the file via Dropbox.

I've found another song that behaves in the same way. Would you like that too? Both songs come from official audio CDs.

As an experiment, I uninstalled and re-installed MC 18, having backed up the library. This restored all the default settings as far as I could see but it made no difference as fare as playing these two tracks goes - they still won't play (nor incidentally will they be analysed for volume levelling).

Thank you.

We were incorrectly detecting the WAV file as a DTS WAV.

The false positive should be fixed next build.

But why should this only happen on Windows Vista and not Windows 7?

Is it some conflict with Vista?

If we detect a DTS WAV file, we let LAV Direct Show filter (a third party decoder) handle the file decoding.  My guess is that it behaves a little differently on the two machines, or possibly that MC is configured to use a different fallback decoder in Options > File Types.

Regardless, it will work well next build.  Hopefully we'll have it out in a couple days.

Thanks again for your help.
