I'm trying to get a new HTPC setup with older parts. As long as there is a HDD plugged in the machine won't boot from DVD drive. It will boot from DVD if there is no HDD plugged in but then I obviously have nowhere to install the OS.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud5

I have tried:
internal and USB DVD drives - both are known good
boot priority in BIOS
F12 - boot menu
changing which SATA connection on the MB I use
formatting the hard disk using a different computer
different DVD's to boot from - known good.

The only thing I can think to try is to use a PS2 keyboard (which I read somewhere) which I'll try as soon as I get a chance.

I'm really at a loss here. Any other ideas?

Is it a burned install disc?

There is a problem with uEFI booting with typical "burned from ISO" install discs and Win7/8.

I should add... I don't know/remember if that gen of Gigabyte board is uEFI or not, but this is a common issue for uEFI systems.

If not, describe what happens when you try in more detail.

Well it seems that it was the keyboard. It boots now that I have plugged in a ps2 keyboard. The USB keyboard works fine except when trying to boot from cd.

Now I can't get the computer to recognize the hdd that I formatted in a different computer.
