I would think they were forced to count it, he does have proof he paid it.

They just put it in a safe for his collection as it is not legal currency:

Australian notes are legal tender, as established by the Reserve Bank Act 1959[5] for all amounts. Australian coins for general circulation, now produced at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, are also legal tender, under the provisions of the Currency Act 1965,[6] but only for the following amounts:
not exceeding 20¢ if 1¢ and/or 2¢ coins are offered;
not exceeding $5 if any of 5¢, 10¢, 20¢ and 50¢ coins are offered;
not exceeding 10 times the face value if the coins offered are greater than 50¢ but less than $10;
to any value if face value is $10 or greater is offered.

Unfortunately I've had similar poor results using alternative currency.....I can not recommend:
- Muffins
- Eagles BD
- Chickens
- Sparking Shiraz
