Cannot change output type from default

Mac mini 10.6.8 MC 19.47

Have the option for optical out and usb dac in dropdown but cannot select either of them.

Could you describe in more detail what happens when you click one?  What if you use the keyboard (enter/space/up/down/etc.)?
