Removing suffix after song titles - help pls
« on: October 10, 2013, 09:49:03 am »

Hello Folks, in the past you helped me add a suffix.

=[Name] [Live at Woodstock] Aug 1969

Now I see some I had added years ago are no longer correct.
I wish to remove the suffix from some song titles (Name).

Please tell me how I can remove unwanted words from the end of a track.
thanks,

Can you describe the stuff you want removed, in terms, of patterns, number of characters, etc.   There needs to be something that helps know what should stay vs. what should go.

I want to be able to take off the ends of some of my song titles [Name]
For example:
change
Barclay James Harvest - Victims of Circumstance [vinyl rip]
to
Barclay James Harvest - Victims of Circumstance

change
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds.flac
to
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

change
Rod Stewart - It's All Over Now (Gasoline Alley)
to
Rod Stewart - It's All Over Now.

thanks,

There is not a clear pattern that can be used to remove "the stuff" at the end.  It appears your Names are supposed to be Artist - Track Name.  Do you file names or file paths contain this information (from which to reconstruct the Artist - Track Name string)?

Typically No, file names may or may not contain the "stuff" at the end of the Track Name.
I very rarely use file name to populate my tags.
My tag properties are hand made/keyed by me.

Where, to add a suffix, I was shown I could use:
=[Name] [Live at Woodstock] Aug 1969

I was hoping there was a command/instruction I could use that said remove xx characters from the end of the Track Name.
such as:
=[Name] [minus 5 characters]

Sure, you can remove 5 characters:

   =RemoveRight([Name], 5)

Or you can remove patterns, but there has to be a clear idea of what the pattern is.

Adding stuff is easy.  Removing it is hard, because you don't know from where to start removing.  This is why I suggest folks don't overload items such as [Name] with other descriptions; instead, use expression fields to construct longer, more descriptive names.

It sounds to me you want an easy way to modify the directory/file names for albums and/or tracks.
You have also stated you manually entered the tags into the library.
Assuming the tags are what you want;
Right click on the album then select Library Tools/Rename, Move & Copy to correct the Album and tracks on the disk.

I have always been in the habit of adding a suffix to distinguish one version from another.
For example the Original Vinyl rip Vs the Remastered CD Vs the SACD/DVD-A.
Or
The album version Vs the single Vs the version on the best of compilation.

Please tell me more about how I should use expression fields.
Maybe it needs to be a "MrC's Tip of the Week".
Just a thought  ;)

It is fine either way you do it.  There are just Pros and Cons, currently.

But I'm wondering now why you want to remove those distinguishing strings from the end of Name?

They were added years ago and are now redundant.
For example when i first got hold of a few flac files i got excited and marked all my track names. Silly i known, but i was young then!
