Windows 8.1 - Crashes Explorer.exe, Can't Uninstall
« on: October 17, 2013, 11:43:52 pm »

Basically doing anything in windows explorer with MC17 installed will crash explorer. You can't even right click files before the thing crashes. To be honest I'm a little peeved at both jriver and Microsoft. First, how can having your plugin constantly and consistently crash windows explorer. Secondly, why does MC17 crash explorer so very consistently (literally anything you do will crash explorer). You can't even uninstall MC17 to fix the problem (if you could even get to the 'Programs and Features' part of the control panel - you have to launch it from Metro otherwise explorer crashes).

Trying to uninstall MC17 gives me a nice: "There was a problem starting C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Temp\JRMediaUninstall.dll A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization route failed.". Ahh nice, k.

Well, it looks like you can't uninstall MC17... So for now, I've nuked the DLL that causes explorer to crash all the time (JRTools.dll).

Here is the nice crash log from event viewer. Doing anything in explorer will cause a crash. Those nullptr exceptions are a person aren't they :-\

This is the first report of any incompatibility with Win 8 or 8.1 that I'm aware of.  You may have something else going on.  Over eager security software, for example.

I experienced the same issue, renaming "JRTools.dll" to something else (e.g. .old) stopped File Explorer from crashing but still could not uninstall using Add/Remove Programs.

Ended up removing MC17 using Revo Uninstaller and installing JR Media Center 19, did not try re-installing MC17 since i figure i should be running the latest version anyway but is worth a try!

After upgrading to Windows8.1 I am having the same problem as OP, explorer.exe crashes continuously. Windows eventviewer points towards JRTools.dll. Uninstall of JRiver failed as well. Renaming JRTools.dll into something else worked for me as well, explorer is not crashing anymore.

Is this something JRiver will look into?

Did you try reinstalling?

Did you try MC19?

MC17 won't be updated.

I could not uninstall but I did run a new install on top of the existing installation, but it did not help with my problem.

Do you have any idea what causes this problem? It seems related to Windows8.1...

I'm having the same problem with Explorer crashing since upgrading to Windows 8.1.  Using Media Center 17.  Haven't tried uninstalling because, well, I don't want to do without MC.

Edit: Well I did try uninstalling MC and had the same problem (ie I can't).  This is a pretty major issue in a recent release for the app's primary OS so I hope it is addressed.

Found a solution?

Renaming the JRTools.dll found within the x64 directory but leaving the JRTools.dll found within the Media Centre 17 directory alone appears to resolve the issue AND allow Media Centre to run.  I have not tested all of the functionality but early indications are that this resolves the explorer crash problem.

It is still not possible to uninstall the application however.  Has it even been a year since the latest release of MC17 was made? <rant removed by Big Brother>

I can confirm the same issue on my recently updated machine.

I can also confirm that renaming x64\jrtools.dll to something else seems to resolve the issue although I have not investigated what effect this might have on MC's functionality.

I have not tried an uninstallation.

Remove JR Media Center 17 using Revo Uninstaller; you can Google or use ninite.com to install Revo, then install latest version of MC17 and restore your Library
