Using MJ for a party
« on: March 05, 2002, 06:59:26 am »

This weekend I used MEDIA JUKEBOX to run the music for a party at home. I only had about a thousand files, but it was great. I was able to play requests on demand and display visualizations and track info pages (useful when people wanted to know the artist name). Everyone thought the whole thing was very slick. Any MJ party stories out there?

Last Saturday I used Media Jukebox v8.0.817 beta to play music for an adult singles dance.  The tie between database and player makes my job a lot easier.  I can look up a song when requested and right away send it to 'next to play'.  I even make up and save playlists for the favorite songs of some of the regular attenders.  I've been playing mp3 for over three years now, and I still get people that are amazed when they see how slick the setup is.

Just two more perfect examples of the uses for digital copies of CD's that have absolutely nothing to do with giving your music away to the general public.

I always thought that radio stations would jump all over this.

They should. I turned on the radio the other day and all I heard was the same ~2sec part of a song. It kept skipping for the longest time so I turned it off.

That's one reason why I chose MJ instead of CDs in the car/home. It makes it a lot easier to find what you want.

LCtheDJ, is it safe to run a beta version at a dance? Has MJ or Windows ever crashed while you were playing a song. Do you tell people something might happen to the music?

So far, the betas of v8 have not had problems with just playback as I use it.

I did have 2 crashes about three years back when I was using Win98 and a slower computer.  With a faster computer and more ram and Windows 2000 Pro, I have had no crashes.  I do keep a portable MiniDisc player plugged in and ready as a backup just in case.

No, I don't warn there may be a problem; there could be a problem with any sound system.  I've seen a DJ playing CDs trip over his own main power cord and stop the music that way.  As with any public performance, it's a good idea to have a plan 'B' ready to go.

BTW, in case anyone wants to know, I use a Sony VAIO notebook with a 750 MHz Pentium III, 512 MB ram, with a USB optical mouse attached.  The audio is fed through a Numark mixer to a pair of JBL EON G2 15" speakers with built-in amps that can supply 300 watts to each woofer and 100 watts to each horn.  At about 1/5 capacity they will output about 90 dB in a room the size of a half-court basketball gymnasium.

A backup plan is always good. I had a CD ready to go in case of mishaps and a need to reboot, but it all went swimmingly. My gathering was quite small, and to cover myself I told everyone that I was testing the software. I also interspersed mpeg music videos with the MP3 files I was playing--that seemed to go down particularly well.
