Gizmo: can it play lossless locally?
« on: November 22, 2013, 07:40:16 pm »

It seems that all music is downsampled to a specified mp3 bitrate.  Is it possible to render a lossless file using Gizmo?

Thanks.

The highest setting is 320 MP3, selectable from options inside Gizmo.

There's currently no lossless support.

Do Android devices have decent DACs to make this worth it, or are external DACs made for Android?

On many android devices you can use USB DACs. I use a DragonFly with my phone (when i remember to bring the dragonfly..), and it works great.

Re: Lossless
Android officially only supports FLAC (and PCM), and they recommend only 16-bit/44.1kHz, since the conversion from 24-bit or higher sample rates is not high quality.

Not sure if its worth adding a FLAC profile for streaming, which would convert to 44.1/16 and encode to FLAC on MCs side.

On my Christmas wish list:  http://fiio.com.cn/products/index.aspx?ID=100000049935442&MenuID=105026002

I don't have the data plan to stream FLAC off network, but would be nice over WiFi.  Maybe when Android puts more support into 24-bit FLAC, I could see a tablet or Android based Ultrabook replacing the PC in a 2-channel set up.

I too would love this feature for when I am out and about on the town.  When I am at the house but not near my system I use Neutron Player (Android) to stream the lossless files I have over wifi.  Took some time to figure out and setup, but if you know neutron player, you will see it is worth it.
If you need any assistance let me know and I will do what I can to help out.

Is WebGizmo lossless?

Unfortunately no.  Whenever I use webgizmo to watch or listen, it goes through flash player which has its limits.

Is WebGizmo lossless?

fwiw you can modify the webgizmo html pages to disable webplay conversion but the file will then DL in PC browser, on Android it will play in default app for FLAC playback
