Ripping from vinyl - Recommended ADCs?
« on: February 28, 2002, 12:00:39 am »

I've seen messages here about people ripping from records.  I'm curious what they are using
to digitize the music.  Is the SNR of a, for example, Soundblaster Audigy card sufficient for a
good recording?  Are there approaches other than using a PC sound card for capture that are higher
quality?  What are the best soundcards for digitizing music?

Thanks,
John

The Audigy is probably the BEST you will find for s/n/r [100|PLS|db].
That's as close to silent as you'll get.
That's what I wish I had and will have at my next purchase.

I use a Creative Live 5 or something liek that.

If you are ripping form Vinyl most of the noise will come form your Phono stage in your pre-amp.

The s/n of your soundcard will almost certainly be far better than your phono stage.

If you have a copy of CoolEdit you can actually see the s/n change as you dselect different inputs on your sound card.

Whats the most important is to have a decent turntable/arm/cartridge setup -

Most of the surface noise can be eliminated by a decent set-up.

Great subject!

I just tried Goldwave and was quite impressed. $40 for the full version is kind of steep, though.
Forget signal to noise ratio. What about feature to price ratio? Anybody got any suggestions as to the best for that. It has to include snap/crackle/pop reduction and tape hiss reduction. Wav edit ability, including splicing.
OK, don't forget s/n ratio. But I've already got that covered.

Ive tried lots of different SCP filters.

Yes they remove the SCP but they also completely kill the life of the music.

If your Vinyl is in reasonably good condition i have found that the best thing is to use no filtering at all.

I have even recorded my 70's punk singles which are in really bad condition and when i play them back the noise and clicks make them more realistic.

I have been on an almost 3 hour long search and have found very little in the way of AFFORDABLE Noise Reduction software. $40 is just about as good as it gets.
I've downloaded a few and will let my results be known.

Mikeh,
You speak wisdom. There is certainly merit in preserving the sound as it is. Easier and cheaper, too. Occam's Razor?

For you'ns that don't know, Occam's Razor is a philosophy of deduction that assumes that the simplest explanation for an event is most likely the correct one. Robert Heinlein loved it.

Here is my point
If i rip a lp to  digital and he has some noises on it,it means that i have this noises when listening to the lp since long,so i can do with it.I have Easycd creator 5 platinium. Not bad ,but very expensive if you have to pay for it.Now i use my minidics player.Vinyl to mini to mp3.For 7" i do not stop the mini dics: a side,i turn,b side, next 7".I edit latter with Easycdcreator
In fact most of the noises come from static electricity, you have to use a special brush
I would like a kind of automatic program
Like for tape on a not so good stereo
Just click on play/rec  and go on

listening to Barefoot Jerry -southern delight

You mean as in "Hey Hey we're the..."?  Thought they were the original nilli vanilli.  But I do remember something about him actually being able to play.
