24 bit padded on all FLAC files
« on: December 29, 2013, 08:20:58 pm »

Hello,

I have looked around for some time trying to grasp this, but I am not having much luck understanding.

My output constantly says that I am outputting 24bit (padded) using a direct connection even if I am inputting a 16bit file. In DSP Studio, I do not have output format changed on any sample rate or even enabled. Can someone please explain why everything I am playing is getting padded or even if that a bad thing :) ?

Thanks
Darren

Media Center always tries to use the highest bit-depth that you hardware supports.

"24-bit padded" means that it is sending 24-bit audio inside a 32-bit container - some hardware does not support 24-bit signals directly. This is a common format with HDMI for example.

There is nothing detrimental to audio quality about outputting a higher bit-depth than the source file.
