.JTV Ok, .TS recordings stutter with 'Pixelization'
« on: January 21, 2014, 07:19:04 am »

Hey Folks

I was able to solve my non .ts recording problem by using the 19.0x version of JRiver

Now I notice when I record to .ts format in JRiver using my Silicon Dust HD tuners with Cable Card, I notice that the resultant .ts files are stuttery and have some pixelization.

When I record the same source to .jtv, the video is fine w/o stutter and has no pixelization

I was hoping to only use .ts files because I can use in WDTV.  I don't want to go through a conversion process and wonder if that conversion process will affect comskip.

This is not a signal weakness problem with the Silicon Dust.  I watched the program as it recorded and I had none of the stutter nor 'pixelization' - only in the .ts recording

thanks in advance for any help

Jeff

Are you using 19.0.108?  It's at the top of the MC19 board.

Thanks

I just did an update. Its better but still some occasional digital artifacts like smudging and pixelization

Now I don't have this problem at all when recording with WMC (to WTV) and when watching TV with the Silicon Dust Quick TV app.

Unfortunately this is still an unsolved mystery.  http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=85877.msg587039#msg587039

On what hard drive do you set your recordings to, local drive or network drive?  If local drive, is it USB (USB2 or USB3?), or internal?  If networked drive, is it mapped drive or UNC?

Antivirus programs are another possibility:

I recorded to local SATA drives that were mounted internally

FWIW, 480i recordings do not have these digital artifacts and defects, just 1080i recordings.

Yaobing - just a thought, is it possible tilly is saturating IO with when recording to TS as it is also simultaneously also recoding to JTV?

That more or less was what I was thinking about, though I was more on hard drive performance than other things.  That was why I kept asking about local drive vs. networked drives.  Maybe I need to examine how I put data to disk.

Thanks.

I made the following change:

Changed: When recording a television show in TS format, MC will use buffering to reduce the number of IO hits.

It will be in an upcoming build.

Thanks Nathan for the bright idea!

Worth a shot but... I get your point, it would have to be a very low throughput drive setup for this to matter.... say one of those cheap NAS or the USB Mass Media ports on home Routers.

Instead of waiting for a new build you can try this DLL.

Here are the steps:

1. Install the latest MC build (MC19.0.108) available on MC19 board if you have not done so already.
2. Download and unzip the above zipped file.
3. Copy the file JRTelevision.dll into MC19's installation folder, replacing existing file.
4. Try recording an HD channel.

Yes.  It was included in build 110.  Now 118 is out.
