How may I reset a view?
« on: March 18, 2014, 11:25:45 am »

How may I discover whether a view has been customised? "Remember exactly what the stock one looks like" need no apply :)

A view such as this, which MrC kindly points out has been customised:

And how may a reset a view to "stock"?

I don't think there's a way to do this (hence the strong Warning not to overwrite the view).

I created a grouping Default Views and created under that grouping the stock MC views so that I can always go back to look at them when responding to user inquiries (since I had long ago changed the views to suit my own needs).

However, try creating a new view, and select the stock Artists template view.

Thanks.

However, try creating a new view, and select the stock Artists template view.

Under Add Library View, I don't see any control marked template, or any item marked Artists. The nearest I see is an item "Artists (small, with files)".

You're too literal!  I think I'll start calling you Hymie. :-)

You've found the right one.

Well, I once took JR Artist to mean Artist, and am not going to make that mistake again :)

(hence the strong Warning not to overwrite the view).

BTW, FTR, I see no advice not to overwrite the view, let alone a warning, let alone strong.

I see only e.g.

Perhaps I'm mistaking you as literal :)

It would be nice if New Library View... provided all the stock views, for recovery when needed.

You get the warning when editing a stock Locked view.

Oh. I don't recall seeing that. Are any stock views locked?

All the stock views are locked (you can see this under Customize View > Advanced > Lock view).

Hmm, my new library Panes view is indeed locked yet when I add a category to the panes ( http://i.imgur.com/LA0T0Tw.png ) and click we.g. tree Genres, I do not get the warning. I get just:

I wonder why. This is a portable install on Win XP.

There are two save view warning dialogs, that being one of them.  It appears when you change a view and navigate away from the view (or if you quit MC w/out saving the view).  This dialog is an after-the-fact reminder (which isn't terribly reliable in any event).

I'm not sure under what circumstances you won't see the other dialog - the Warning about Overwriting a locked view.  I'm not able to reproduce it, but I'm thinking I have experienced it missing before.

I look at either of them as usually helpful, sometimes annoying, and not entirely trustworthy.

Thanks. I'd be interested to know any specific circumstance in which you do see it.

All of these:

* Edit and save any Locked view.
* Copy a locked view, edit and save
* Lock an unlocked view and save

It could be a portable install difference.  Many state items are saved to the registry.

Thanks.

* Edit and save any Locked view.
I see no "Edit" or "Save", but Customize, OK does show the warning here.

* Copy a locked view, edit and save
Ditto.

* Lock an unlocked view and save
Unlock, OK does not show the warning here.
