This might be more of a developers question, but some of the old timers may know the answer.

Why do the volume and track position indicators in 'Playing Now' change with the track title? Some song titles, like CSN&Y's 'Country Girl: Whiskey Boot Hill/Down, Down, Down/"Country Girl" (I Think You're Pretty)' really tend to exaggerate the effect. Wouldn't it be more practical to have them at a fixed width (like they assume when the title is relatively short... 'Helpless', for example). This would give one a fixed reference point... useful in determining volume and track position visually.
