File -> Import Playlist

You will find the imported playlist at the left panel under
Playlists ->  Imported Playlists

Were do you keep the files?

I keep my music files in the "my music" folder....I have no idea where the playlist files are kept.  I have looked for my playlist files for an hour on the computer but I cannot find them

When you export a playlist and import it to another computer you don't get the files in the playlist with you. You just take a list with songs but not the actual files.

In order to do that I would suggest creating a virtual handheld device at your PC and sync the playlists you want with that device. In that way when you sync a playlist you will get in that folder the playlist with the files listed in it.

Tools -> Options -> Handheld.

Choose "Add device" and at "Device path" browse to a folder at you PC. That folder will be your virtual device. From the panel on your right choose the playlist you want to take with you. Apply the changes.

At the panel on your right, choose
Drives and Devices -> "The name of your virtual Handheld" and Sync Now

That's it. You can copy now the virtual device folder and drop it to the other PC.

Now when you choose to import the playlist in the folder the songs will just play.

I hope I helped  ;)

Bertram - is this Media Jukebox, or Media Center (version 19) that you're talking about?

OK, I'm going to move this thread to the Media Jukebox board.

All of the songs on my laptop are also on the desktop so the playlist should work because the songs are already there?

As long as the Filename field value is the same on both systems.

Otherwise, you need to modify the file paths in the playlist to match those in the destination system.

NotePad will do.  An M3U is just a text file containing file paths.

my playlist file is not an m3u...it is an mpl and it does not let notepad open it up..
I will try exporting again as m3u if I am able and let you know if that worked
I do appreciate all the suggestions and help.

An MPL is also just a text file.  Open NotePad, and then you can just Drag the .mpl file onto the empty document.  Notepad will open the MPL.

You could also use relative paths when extracting the playlist. In that way you just need to put the playlist to the same place relatively to the folders your music.

Well thank you for all the help....unfortunately it looks like it will be too time consuming to to change 14,000 records in the playlist using notepad just so that I can transfer my playlist from my desktop to my laptop.  I did try making the path on my laptop the same as my desktop but unfortunately windows does not let you change the name in the path on ones own user account without creating a new one (which means I have to fix all my settings).

Also the first suggestion to create a device on my hard drive was a good one but that copies all of the files to the device drive and then recopies them to my laptop when all of the songs are already on my laptop..I may look more into this option once I get an external hard drive because I would like to take my songs to work and listen to them there but again I may run into the file path not matching junk.

To be honest I am not sure I know enough about the inner workings of playlists to get it to do what I want.  I do appreciate the suggestions and it gives me knowledge to play around with these options.

Pick one file from the Desktop.  What is the full pathname of that file?

Pick the equivalent file on the Laptop.  What is the full pathname of that file?

Be exact.

One additional question... By transferring the playlist from Desktop to Laptop, what are you ultimately trying to accomplish?

I am trying to have my playlist on my laptop (I already have my music on my laptop, but I am creating my master playlist on my desktop which I would like to transfer and play on my laptop
...and I will also have all my music copied to an external drive which I want to take to work to listen to which should also have my playlist, but this I think can be done easily by syncing as stiv32 explained.

Bertram,
You can use quotes by doing this:

[ quote ]  but without the spaces
Something someone said
[ /quote ] also without spaces
Something you said.

Removing the spaces, you will see this:

You can use a Notepad's Edit > Replace command to change all of them at once.  Set:

   Find what: C:/Users/Bertram
   Replace with: C:/Users/Bert/

and hit the Replace All button.
