Hi,

I merged two libraries as follows:

 1) loaded Library A (large library, permanent collection)

 2) merged Library B (small library, new music) into Library A
    (note I was following the suggestion wrt new music mentioned
     in the merge documentation)

All seemed well after the merge.  But after exiting MJ and restarting, I found:

 1) Library A did indeed include all the music from A and B
 2) All songs that were in Library A before the merge had lost
    their category info
 3) Songs that were in Library B before the merge retained their categories info

Both libraries were set up the same way originally (in particular, same category structure).

This is repeatable (in my case) -- happens consistently.  Good thing I have backups!  

I've noticed previous threads reporting on the unreliability of categories, but nothing
about this in particular.  Makes me very nervous!  I would appreciate any advice.  Thanks.

Maybe for safety you (and I) should export all categories to *.m3u or some other type separate from MJ and on disc.
It would be cool if you do a mass export of playlists.  (Any plans for this Nikolay, Matt, Jim?)
They could then be brought in to another library manually if MJ never got this aspect together.
What version of MJ are you using?

Sorry; should have mentioned that I'm running MV 7.2.280 under XP.  

It seems odd to me that categories are one of the main distinguishing features that makes MJ attractive wrt to other players, yet categories are buggy (at least so it seems from reading back posts).

You should start thinking a categories as no more than playlists.
That is how it is in V8 - categories are sort of gone, but still there.
They are just a group of playlists.
