still no sound from dts 5.1 channel in wav - LAV problem
« on: August 24, 2014, 07:30:22 am »

well, the title says it all, I have a lot of dts cd/dvds only audio, and MC20 gives only static noise.
I checked for dts, wav, and wavpack, mediacenter internal.
Playing via analog, ASIO, Steinberg MR816x. Tried all other options, wasapi, direct sound, nothing, Always the static noise,
mediainfo sees the the dts compression in the wav files, but says that their is no codec installed.
I thought this was a standard codec in Media Center?
When I play via HDMI to my AVR bitstreaming, the amp does the job. But then I can not use all the nice stuff like DSP in MC.
I tried to add fddshow x64 tryouts, and put the ff libdts.dll in the plugins folder of LAV, but still nothing.

Hendrik, or someone else, help needed, please, The same goes for DTS MA when putting dtsdecoderdll.dll in the lav/plugins folder.
Using windows 8 x64 pro.

DTS in WAV is one of the worst things you can put your audio into. The WAV file simply claims to be an ordinary WAV file, and if you play it you get nothing but noise. To try to detect that its actually DTS, you have to apply heuristics and basically try to "guess".

You could try sharing one of the files that don't work, but in general I strongly recommend to distance yourself from this way of storing DTS audio.

Hendrik, I've seen you post these warnings before, and I agree that it's a pain to get working. However, iirc this was fixed in MC17 or 18 for me, at least.
I just checked my one and only 5.1 DTS in wav album. Plays perfectly, with all file associations set to "Automatic", and it did so when set to "JRiver audio engine with directshow filters" too, for wav. I could send you a sample file if you need to compare one that works with OP's one that doesn't.

I have a bunch that work, as I remember fixing it before, which is why samples that don't work would be good.

ok, I'm in hospital right now, I will sendd the shortest dts wav I have, when I am home. i'm used to use
WAV, as this is the most common format in recording studios, which was my job for years.
I never had problems with them. I guess it has something to do with windows 8. Thats when the errors occured.
and the problems with movies with dts hd ma, the same. The original disks all work fine on my
Blu ray universal player, but the rips dont.

Very strange, when I play the files on my server itself, I have no problems, everything plays,
only difference is that the server is on windows 7 Ultimate x64 and the client is on windows 8 Pro x64.

I had my infiltrations in the hospital and are already back home, feeling lot better now.

I installed VLC on the client PC and VLC plays the multichannel dts wav without problem.
I know that VLC has it own codecs.
Is it possible that madVR has something to do with it, cause thats not installed on the server by the installation of MC20.
Probably it will be installed when I play a movie on it. Just guessing.

I may be wrong, but LAV might not be installed either unless you play a movie.

I installed foobar2000 on client pc, added the needed components, and all my dts cd wavs also playing fine in foobar.
Gonna try to fresh re install MC20 and see what it does.
Otherwise Im gonna convert all the dts cd to flac, big job....

Still trying to find out why dts hd ma bluray rips dont play, placed the dtsdecoderdll.dll in the lav folder, but MC doesnt react.
I have version 1.1.0.9 in the codec folder from TMT 6.5 (official one). Guess Im doing something wrong.

Well firstly, your sample track seemed to work fine here, and I've never played any other DTS-WAV files, so I'm guessing that something is wrong on your system.
This was going through a DAC which has no DTS decoder, so it was definitely MC handling it.

Dumb question, would renaming the tracks to .dts force MC to expect DTS audio in them, or is that for another type of DTS audio?

You don't really want to convert to FLAC, since that is technically a lossy process, and quality depends on the DTS decoder used.

1. DTS is a container codec, renaming .wav to .dts is unlikely to work.  DTS is a lossy compression
2. FLAC is a container codec which support lossless dts 6 channel.  It is NOT lossy for 5.1
3. You can also mux to .mka if you don't like FLAC

Neither FLAC or DTS are containers, they are both audio codecs.

You cannot put DTS in FLAC. If you convert DTS to FLAC, you decode the DTS audio, and then re-encode to FLAC - and there is no trace of DTS left after that.

thanks hendrik, my bad, i always mix up container and codec

encoding DTS to flac however does not lose any information, it just loses the ability to bitstream over spdif as flac stores the channels separately.  DTS is a lossy compression CODEC which allows bitstreaming multichannel over spdif.  my point was that multichannel .flac is NOT lossy, and since one can't bitstream .wav DTS either, there is no loss of either data or functionality by getting rid of those nasty .wav files.

re-reading the OP, he's trying to play DTS over analog, so i'm assuming he means discrete multi-analog...

Being a lossy codec, DTS audio is stored as floating-point values.
Being a lossless codec, FLAC stores integer fixed-point PCM data.

This is a lossy conversion.
There may not be any audible differences, but it is technically lossy, and depends on the decoder that you are using.
Earlier versions of the Arcsoft DTS decoder would convert DTS tracks to 24-bit PCM rather than 16-bit PCM for example.

If it's literally just DTS audio stored inside a WAV file, I would put it into an MKA container instead.
This keeps the audio in its original format and Media Center doesn't seem to have any problem playing these files.

I have some albums which came with a DVD that included a DTS surround track (but not marked as DTS-WAV) and I converted those all to MKA files.

Thanks for learning me something today!

Thanks for the tips. I converted a few songs to flac, and I don't hear the difference, I don't hear above 12 kHz.
But I still wonder why MC20 on the client gives only noise.
Both PCs have external DAC's, connected via multi analog. The server goes to Avid MBOX Pro 3 and straight to powered speakers.
The client goes to Steinberg MR816X, from steinberg analog to Yamaha AVR.

THe DTS HD MA problem is solved ; I registered the dtsdecoderdll.dll to my PC user name.

And it's she, not he :-)

Made some progress.
Uninstalled MC19 and 20 from client. Clean install after from MC20.
My audio files were still as a copy on the client, so I thaught, what the hell and imported these
in the main library of the client.
Normally I Always select the library server on the client, but I forgot to switch it.
So I went to the map with the dts wavs, and eureka they played, then I noticed that
I wasnt in the server library but in the main library.
Conclusion, the same dts wav file on the media server pc/network, its getting pulled by the client and rendered by the client,
gives noise, the same file present on the main library on the client pc, plays correctly.
So there is something wrong with the media server/network from MC20.
Everything else get pulled by the client correctly except dts wav. But these files are playing when they are on the client.
Anybody has an idea?

Perhaps it is to do with the DSD / DoPe settings on the server?
