I skimmed through that, waiting for the indication that it was an Engadget joke, a la April 1st.

I'll spare you the iconic Picard face palm gif.

Will MS be bankrupt shortly before it is released, or soon after ?  That's the only question.

One office pool might be "How long before the first leaked Windows 9 download appears on the Internet ?".

There is certainly a massive opportunity for someone to vacuum up both Apple and MS's business over the next year.  Google ?   Can they pivot that fast ?

I can't see a Windows 9 coming out if this Windows 10 is being released in 2015?

Did you guys also try the link to the soon to come preview?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-coming-soon

From the video.

This seems like a legit item from Microsoft.

There is no Windows 9. I think Win 8.1 will be considered as 9 in the future, just as XP was Win5.

Codenamed "Cheetah" ? ;)

One of the things I've heard thrown around is that the number 9 is considered to be unlucky in Japan, so that's one reason to avoid it.

With version numbers for so many products, I wish companies would just use the year. Windows '15 or Windows 2015.

The Verge's liveblog seems to have the most actual information on it so far, but there isn't much yet.

I like the continual review/feedback loop.  Microsoft's development is starting to look more like JRiver's.  ;)

I think they are on the right track with the changes in Windows 10, trying to explicitly get to the customers who are still using Windows 7 by bringing back the start menu, and getting rid of the full-screen modern applications, instead integrating them into the desktop workflow - i might actually use one or two modern applications then!

A lot of love for power users, too. Virtual Desktops, command line improvements, etc!

Agreed on all fronts.  A bunch of the new features they demoed, aside from the fixing the terrible, do seem to be heavily borrowed from OSX (they really, really just have decided that they want to be Apple), but I'm okay with that.

Except the name, which they don't even seem to have good talking points about.  Very weird.

Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ /* 95 and 98 */
} else {

and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

reddit thread that didn't quote right

I saw that too, but it smells like horse poo to me.

No way they make major marketing decisions based on a thing like this.  Even Microsoft isn't so ridiculous.  Plus, they completely control the text string returned by the version object.  I don't doubt that there is some ridiculous, awful code out there that does version checking this way.  But, even if they decided to care about it, they could have easily just had it return something else (Windows v9 springs to mind).

If the redditor was actually a Microsoft engineer, then I'll even grant that it might be a ridiculous rumor inside the company.  But that sounds a lot like people there discussing the change after the fact, and coming up with a convenient side-benefit to the (otherwise oddball) change.

And then, you know, rumor mill, and it becomes the reason why.  Maybe.  According to some guy.

If you're wanting to make a bootable drive, Rufus makes things really easy.
I've always had issues with USB drives using the legacy BIOS implementation rather than UEFI, and every time I have to make a new boot drive, I've forgotten how to do it.
This tool lets you create a UEFI-only boot disk without any difficulty whatsoever - which was required to get this to install on my MacBook Pro.

I'd appreciate it if anyone running the preview would upvote the comment requesting USB Audio Class 2 support in the feedback app under Hardware and Devices → Audio, sound and volume.

Agreed. They skipped Office 13 because 13 is seen as unlucky too (Office 2007 is Office 12, Office 2010 is Office 14). HP changed names on their server range - they had always been Gx, where x is a number, so G1, G2 etc., until G8, which is slang for willy in China or something, so it became Generation 8, or Gen8 for short.

Silly really.

[edit] According to  62*'s post above rumor is they are skipping Windows 9 because an internal call function would confuse it with Windows 95 and 98.

You really think Microsoft would rename their product based on some 20 year old compatibility check in  Java of all things? :p
I wouldn't believe all the rumors in the world.

I think names ( "Vista" ) is what marketing people want... I think they went with "Windows 7" because Vista was so hated that they wanted to change to a different naming scheme.

Since Windows 7 was well received, they kept with sequential numbers for 8.

I think I heard once that they do not want to use years as names, in case the release slips due to major bugs that must be fixed.  ( "Windows 2014 is coming soon!  Oops, Windows 2015 is coming soon!")

Well I certainly hope that MS stays in business. I use Mac, Windows, and Linux (Ubuntu) platforms and I tend to draw on the strengths of each particular OS. Mostly, the Mac has programs I like to use and then there are Windows programs and gaming that I can't get on the other platforms. Sometimes I have sister programs, like Media Center, where I own both Windows and Mac licenses.

I have Windows 8.1 and I got around the Metro interface by installing a few app tweaks that made it appear more like Windows 7. I probably wouldn't have upgraded to version 8 at all except that I wanted to be able to carry all my programs and settings along. I sincerely hope MS gets rid of the Metro setup. I never use it, I don't like the graphics and colors, and I don't care to have my social media in my face all the time.

In any case, Windows 10 will give me an excuse to build a new PC.  ;D

You can always use the free Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and burn the Windows 10 Tech Preview image to a USB Drive (8 GB or larger).
That's how I installed it here.

Had a quick play wit W10 in a under Hyper-V and it looks good to me and seems nice and stable.  I'd go so far to say it really just seems like an iterative release.  I like that as a default you:
1) Boot to the desktop
2) The start button is back and it includes the metro apps
3) You can now paste into a CMD/Powershell

Unlike W8 it is all very familiar and just worked.  I'm not sure why the big wait till mid next year or why it is not just Win8.5  Lets see how they price the upgrade.

Is the Start Menu the best place to have live tiles? They would be better on the desktop, which they had a version of in Vista/Windows 7 - Gadgets  ?

You've been able to copypasta into the command shell in Windows for as long as I can remember:

I'm loving Windows 10! It's everything Windows 8 is not!!!! I will install JRiver on my Win10 laptop tomorrow and put it through its paces. So far though - I have nothing but praise for it. April 15th - it seems to be a sure buy for me just like every version of JRiver!
