What music streaming services do JRiver users listen to?
« on: October 06, 2014, 10:42:40 am »

Even if you don't stream music much, I thought a list of "on-demand" music streaming services and the country you use them from, could be helpful -- I'll update the list here:

1 -  AllMusicUSA      192Kps
2 -  GroovesharkUSA      192Kps
3 -  NPR (National Public Radio)        USA      320Kps
4 -  JangoUSA      192Kps
5 -  QobuzFrance      Lossless
6 -  SpotifySweden      320Kps
7 -  DeezerFrance      320Kps
8 -  Tidal (ex Wimp)Norway      Lossless

10- SongzaUSA      192Kps
11- SomaFMUSA      128Kps
12- AllformusicFrance      192Kps
13- Electro Swing RadioGermany      ? Kps

Hello
No equivalent here ...  Qobuz is going bust  >:(

Who's got ""between 9 and 12 " ?

actually the French "procédure de sauvegarde" is quite similar to Chapter 11 (maybe a little less severe). They are still paying their suppliers, employees, and taxes so they are still solvent. Also they will undoubtedly get a 4 month renewal of this statute. 9 to 12 million  euros is nothing in this game. Not saying they aren't leaving themselves open to "hostile" financing or mergers however. It depends if some one/corporation/government wants them out of the picture or not ... (my understanding is that if the French government did not allow the deal between Deezer and Orange, the latter giving out their premium service for free, their financing wouldn't have fallen through). IMO, of course,  if they go bust its because bigger players do not want them around as a threat, not the 12 million euros. OK Qobuz is not spotify, but to give you an idea of the money involved,  last year Spotify got financing for 200 million in a month ... ending up with a valuation of 4 Billion USD -- ok thats "virtual" but there is big money in this; IPO time for the Swedes.

On another note, surprised no one is putting in their streaming interests. People are always asking how to make these things work in MC, it would be nice to know what people listen to and from where  I'd think - there are licensing issues not just tweaks to the program.

I have friends that use Deezer (183 countries) now that it is available in the USA and Tidal (US & UK).

Deezer started in France and you don't have it on your list already?  ;)

I have been using Tidal (WiMP) since they launched about 6 weeks ago - awesome service!

However, so far as I can see, there is no way of integrating this within MC and accordingly being able to control via JRemote/Gizmo etc.

Or is there?

I know about it, but I don't like it  ;D Theyyy just did a politcal run around and put Qobuz up against the wall. (Orange gives their premium service to their clients for free, knocking you a lot of Qobuz's client base. By the time it goes through the courts euh ... we'll see if Qobuz has any money left)

Spotify Netherlands
I use an ipad to airplay to a windows airplay receiver and use jriver's dsp to add roomcorrection with the wdm driver. I prefer to use airplay instead of the spotify windows app with spotify connect because I can use the controls on the lockscreen and control center instead of the need to switch to the spotify app.

Spotify Premium.
Plays on iOS devices, android, windows, Roku.  Now, 50% off if you want to include a family member on Premium. Been through several streaming music products: Spotify is my favorite...

Qobuz (France).
Mainly for trying albums before purchasing and downloading them. Still not fully  as confortable as having one's all files downloaded and at entire disposal.

Pretty much a direct stream. There are no channels to choose, you pretty much get what they are playing. No up-vote or down-vote or anything like that.

Just moved from Spotify to Tidal.

Prefer the desktop with Spotify but sound is much better with Tidal and is now affordable at euro 20.

Moved from Spotify Premium and compared Qobuz to Tidal - but preferred the sound with Tidal, also found the anglo/french etc. annoying on Qobuz.

If Spotify Premium upgraded their sound quality I would probably go back to Spotify as the desktop UI is much better and more functional than Tidal atm. But for the time being Tidal wins just on quality of sound.

Music Choice International  streaming from USA to Belgium Telenet via digital cable.

I use now only the free channels included by my television provider, but am thinking about taking the full package for 5 EUR/month.
Quality is great, going from my digicorder via hdmi through my Yamaha AVR to my htpc (RME DAC analog inputs) to JR MC so I can use DSP and then via ASIO
driver RME DAC, analog outs, back to the Yamaha AVR3010 via the multi surround analog inputs, Yamaha is set to 'direct' so all controls
are happening in JR Media Center.

And, Music Choice Mobile for my Ipad and Iphone

Tidal- since South Africa is included, which means no jumping through hoops. It's catching on here in sunny SA.
I reckon many who jimmied Spotify and other accounts will switch (for music that is).

Just for France & mostly Europe i would like to bring attention to Mezzo TV.
(cable/fiber optics )
Exclusively live performances.
http://www.mezzo.tv/
http://www.mezzo.tv/en/receive-mezzo
Some good shows on Live HD (Vienne Jazz Festival, ect.) from 2.50 to 3.50 € per month
They dont bother to hunt you down if you record or share 'cause they mostly don't make and sell copies 😊

I am using the trial. The for you recommended playlists are really well made. But I hardly listen to them. I do listen to the on demand replays of the beats 1 shows of Joshua Homme and St. Vincent. I don't like adding stuff from the Apple Music library to my own library because it clutters the genre and composer tags with additions that make finding my own music more difficult. So it's ok but I will stay with Spotify.

  • Radionomy offers thousands of stations @128Kbps. Playing the stream inside Media Center you get Name and Artist info and also the Artist Slideshow at the Playing Now screen in Theater View.
  • TuneIn is also a known source of good stations @different bitrates.

thanks I've never seen radionomy before - it's not music on demand though so I didn't add this to the list. NPR is up there as there is a lot of on-demand content, even though it also has radio stations.

You're right, neither Radionomy nor TuneIn offer music on demand. However, I use them a lot when I'm lazy to make my own playlists and when I want to discover different music or remember old tracks  ;) .

Changed from Rdio to Apple Music when changing from Windows to my new Mac Mini. But changed to Spotify Premium because of streaming problems with Apple Music and it's unavailability on my Android based smartphone. Spotify runs great :)

Google Play - but basically what I am looking for is a streaming service that would offer parallel streams on up to 4 devices for a reasonable price - and if it wasn't from G or A I'd surely go there. Spotify Familiy is too expensive, so curious about upcoming Google Play Family tarriffs.

Another vote for Google Play Music.  Their depth of library can't be beat, and with the new Chromecast Audio supporting high quality streaming, they are headed in the right direction.  I'm hopeful that they soon will offer lossless streaming.  I just wish they would release an official API and that MC could implement an interface.

They should check out di.fm and it's sister stations. di.fm is electronic music, they have 6 stations in all with maybe 100 channels on each. it's free with ads at 128k Mp3, and about $10/month for 128 ACC or 320 Mp3 and no ads for over 500 channels. they have a link to play their steream in an outbord hardware player, in Media Center or in a browser. I think it's the best deal on the web for compressed streamed music.
It's worth checking out. Here are the stations each with man, many channels! I think it can be recorded with Media Center, I am still using Station Ripper as is record multiple streams.

  • Qobuz <- still there  ;D
  • Twitch (in audio mode only sometimes)
  • Youtube (i downgrade the video quality when on hifi system or shut the screen off on phone, I do not use Google Music or what is their music service right now)
  • Musahino FM from a TEAC NP-H750 with their vtuner.com service.
  • Bandcamp (a little bit, usually go there to buy Cd or downloads).
