Help with Netflix
« on: November 17, 2014, 09:20:28 am »

Netflix recently shut their API off for us.  This is unfortunate.

However, they're still allowing use of their API through a few programs:
Instant Watcher: http://instantwatcher.com/
Fanhattan: https://www.fan.tv/
Yidio: http://yidio.com/
NextGuide: http://www.nextguide.tv/
Flixster: https://www.flixster.com/homepage
Can I Stream It?: http://www.canistream.it/
FeedFliks: http://feedfliks.com/
Instant Watch Browser for Netflix:
http://www.rokuguide.com/channels/instant-watch-browser

We're wondering if anyone could run one of those programs and use Fiddler to sniff the communication?  Is the communication something that we could emulate?

Thanks for any help.

Matt - I'm happy to help, but not sure my techie level is sufficient. I think I have fiddler but don't understand what it is that you want.

Really glad that you are looking into this!!!

Cheers,

Matt,

I have both fiddler and wireshark installed on my home system.  Let me know what you need done and I can provide you with the trace.

Do you know why they shut off access to their API?

It's just opening the other program and browsing.  What does the call stack look like?  Could it be emulated?

I was under the impression that the "chosen ones" are still using the same API.  They just turned off access for everyone else (by developer token/key) so you wouldn't be able to emulate it without a valid key.

I might be wrong, but I don't think we'd be too proud to use a different but working key.

I assume JRiver have contacted Netflix and asked if they could have a new token/key to allow continued API support for their "1000's" of users?  Just asking :)

I've just started using Netflix so the kids can get access to movies, so would love MC to continue to support it in Theatre View, but I think it needs to be through the popper channels so we know support will continue.

Otherwise time gets spent coding workarounds that are just likely to get blocked or broken again at another time.

ive personally emailed netflix over a year ago, and told them they can stop with useless marketing emails until they allow for jriver users to view ALL of what netflix has to offer all while available from within theaterview.
received a reply of. ohh we'll look into that. would love to have you as a customer... blahhh, blah

*i'm aware one can unsubscribe... i was making a point to them.

We have.

Aren't most of the services that stream to you? So you never see the API calls to netflix etc? I.E. they are between Netflix and you.

Very short sighted in my opinion, but then what we know, we're only the paying customer!

So what if you ask them for access to a new "app" for the ID hardware.
Then put that app in jmc  ;D

Netflix has over 50 million subscribers

I'm gonna say....they don't care if they lose every single jriver user

Matt,
I have the fiddler trace.  Let me know where I can upload or send it along.

After a bunch of stuffing around I too have got Netflix based on nwboater's WMC method (+ some addition geo spoofing stuff).  Matt if you are still after any traces etc, I'm up to getting this working properly in MC as relying on WMC makes me wince!
Thanks

Greetings:

I am not really a Netflix user, but my son is. Last time he came home, he was not able to use Netflix.

I am curious to see if it works. Within MC 20, I see no Netflix account set up in "services", but in MC 19, it is there.
MC 20 theater view  does not have any Netflix in it. ( I may have removed it ), if not can you bring it back.
Will Netflix account set up be back assuming there is a work around ?

Thanks.

George, what has happened is that Netflix had been providing many small companies such as JRiver with an API. It allowed integration of Netflix into their programs and was working nicely with MC. Late last year Netflix disabled this API for most companies except for some of the big guys like Roku. JRiver has tried and tried to get Neflix to again allow use of it but no luck. So it is not something JRiver has control of.

For now it seems the kluge of JRiver MC20 and WMC as explained in the other thread http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=93428.msg644985#msg644985 is the best way to get Netflix in Theater View.

I wish it could be otherwise.

Did you get Netflix to work in Theater View from the guide in the other thread?

Cheers,
Rod

Hi,

No. I tried to use it in Theater view, I could not find the "Netflix" thing in MC 20, I know it is in MC 19. Maybe I deleted it when I was messing with theater view in MC 20. ( I may have to manually edit the theater view to insert it again).

I downloaded the file from your link, unzip to Program files etc. Then I ran the install. I get error message I forgot what the error. It looks like  registration error. I am on Windows 8.1 64 bit.

I will visit it again later to night.
As I wrote, I am not really in to Netflix, (my son does have the subscription info), it now just piqued my curiosity.

Thanks.

It will not do any good to try to get it going in MC19. With the Netflix API disabled by Netflix there is no way that it will work directly in MC - any version. Wish we could just do that and have it function!

That is why I never bothered due to the API issue.

Thanks.
