Hi,

I noticed something curious. I have a scatched copy of "Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley", which I tried to rip. It failed (too many read errors). The next time I clicked on "home" in MJ, up came an ad to purchase none other than "Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley". Seems an unlikely coincidence, since that's not a commonly-advertised album.

I could not find a "privacy notice" that explains any MJ policy. I would not be happy to know that my database and ripping actions are monitored. Have any of you noticed similar things, or perhaps know officially what's going on?

Maybe they are monitoring you, since that does not happen to me using MJ8.

Are you sure you did not click on "Find", Under Playing Now that will pull up the current item that is in the player

Geez ... how do you thing they make money. Not by selling beta versions at $25 a shot. They don't reveal your personal data, but they do get paid big time for your surfing habits and one shot ads.

I'm going to wait for JimH's response to this one before I form an opinion but I will say that "Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley" is also on my MJ home page and I never heard of her.

Is there a privacy policy other than that stated during installation?

I run a personal firewall and the only time MJ asks to go out to the net wiht an outgoing connection is when I request program updates or to look up CDDB info. I haven't suspected spyware, but it is a legitimate question since alot of freeware music apps are going this route.

But, from the JRiver side, it's a little insulting to be asked "Are you spying on us?" Maybe like someone might feel if they were asked if they used drugs when applying for a job.

And a "privacy policy statement" from a company who would do such a thing might not be totally reliable.

Try installing Ad-Aware or a similar program. Quite effective in weeding out little varmints like Double-Click and ValueClick.

Thanks for the feedback. Both the policy (Matt from JRiver) response and the anecdotal evidence make it highly likely that MH isn't spyware. So I'm reassured.

But I don't think it's unreasonable (and certainly not insulting) that I would like to see a privacy statement. Trusted web brands these days have clearly-stated policies, and many support those with external audits. I think it's good for business. Furthermore, if in fact MJ were spyware, I don't think that would be evil, as long as it's clear to the user. Indeed, opt-in reporting can be a good deal for both the user and the business -- the user might (for example) get the free version of MJ and any user might also get better service (Google, for example, has an opt-in reporting feature).

I worked at planter peanuts for about 2 years many moons ago.

I think I cooked every nut under the sun.

My boss hit me with a stick once for burning some nuts, and I got a 25 cent per hour raise.

since I was 17 years old i guess he was paying me off so i would not report him for child abuse.
