Read only, Windows 8.1 [Solved]
« on: February 08, 2015, 10:05:27 am »

Does anyone know how to disable the read only attribute in Win 8.1? I have researched this, but have not found a solution. MC 20 keeps displaying a error message as follows. Tagging Error. Media Center encountered errors while tagging or moving files. Check that the files exist, are not read only, and are not in use by other programs. An example: This is happening now while I am analyzing music that I imported into my library yesterday.

The same instructions for editing the Read-Only flag apply to Windows 8.1 as they do to earlier versions of Windows:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/change-a-read-only-file

Please note that you can select parent folders and apply changes to all files contained within at once.  However, folders themselves do not have a read-only attribute (they cannot be set read-only), so you'll never get the "grayed out" checkbox to un-gray-out on a folder (so you don't waste time pulling your hair out).

Also note that you cannot modify the read-only attribute (or any other permissions attributes) for files you do not own.  If other users may have "created" the files in question (including moving them from another copy of Windows or computer) then you may need to take ownership of the files first:

I have tried this numerous times. I will explain what happens. My music is located on my C drive in a folder that I created and named RF_MUSIC. I access this folder ,right click, select properties. The read only line is selected. I unselect and enter apply. A splash screen appears with the Header, Confirm Attribute Changes. You have chosen to make the following attribute changes: unset read-only
Do you want to apply this change to the folder only, or do you want to apply it to all subwolfers and files as well? At this time I select :apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files. I select OK button. A new screen with the header Applying Attributes pops up Underneath the header is a line that reads applying attributes to. Underneath this line all of my files in the RF_MUSIC folde scroll very fast. At this time I would assume the attributes would be changed, they remain read only. I have tried restarting the computer at this point thinking that would help but it does not. I have been searching for many hours on googke without being able to find a solution. It seems that this has happened to many Win 8.1 users with some suggestions that are offered working. I have attempted all of the solutions that I have found with no success as have many others.

I am the only user of this computer, there are no guests. I have full administrator rights.

I ran MalwareBytes and I was not infected.

Thanks for your help.

You need to put [ quote ] before and [ /quote ] after what you want to quote (removing the spaces).

As I explained, folders will always show a "dot" (or grayed-filled) icon like this:

Because there is no such thing as a read-only folder.  What you did is exactly how you apply the change to all contents of a folder.  However, you cannot change the attributes of a file that you do not own or do not have permissions to modify.  This can happen for a variety of reasons.  Common reasons are using multiple user accounts on a computer, sharing files between computers with dissimilar user accounts, and restoring files from a backup image.  But other things can happen including just filesystem metadata screw ups.

If you're having trouble like this, and the files should not be read only:

Make sure they aren't actually in-use by other applications.  That's probably the most common problem.  Assuming it isn't that (maybe reboot to make sure), a good first step is always to do chkdsk on the disk that stores the files.  This verifies and repairs the filesystem metadata structures (including security settings for files) on a disk.  This is described here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Disks

Then, take ownership of the files as is described above, and then lastly take full permissions on the folder at the top (and all sub-directories and files).  Guides for doing this are linked in my instructions above.

Thank you glynor! I came down with the flu that kept me in bed for a few days, this is why I am so late on my reply. I read thru the guide's that you suggested and was able to resolve the problem that I was having. Now when I add a cd to my library the error message that would pop up has stopped appearing. Again your effort to help me out with my problem is greatly appreciated.
