I have about 20 old DTS music CDs that I want to playback in full surround sound in MC.  I can get them to playback in Stereo by changing the file extension of the ripped files to .DTS from .WAV but I can't seem to get the full surround effect no matter what I do with settings, etc.

Is there a format that I can change these to that will playback natively in MC and preserve the surround sound?  I tried MKA but that didn't work.

If they work renamed as .DTS then they will also work in multichannel. Its impossible for them to decode only to stereo.

For what it's worth, bitstreaming doesn't work with MKA files - I reported that quite some time ago.
It may be the same issue here?

I don't have any DTS CDs to test, all my DTS-in-MKA files are ripped from DVD-V discs.

Both .dts and dts-wav are natively decoded in MC.  I've never had any issue with them

You may have to look at the output format settings, it's possible something in there is messing with the 'surround effect'

I'm experiencing it for myself.  Please see attached screengrab of file trying to playback in JRiver that plays just fine in VLC.

Do you normally bitstream DTS?

What (and how) are you outputting to?  AVR, DAC?

I don't bitstream DTS.  Im playing back to an AVR.  Here's another weirdness...if I open the file directly it plays back fine but if I open the exact same file from within the database, it only plays back 2 channels.

Have you been into the Audio>"DSP & output format..."  settings and double checked what you have setup for Output format? I found on my system, a recent MC version upgrade I did changed my DSP settings (on my Client machine to that of my Server settings).

But we only support bitstreaming through the video engine for the time being, and I don't foresee that changing anytime soon.

More info:

The issues I'm having with playback are on a client PC.  So I tried importing some local test files into the Main library on the client and disconnected from the shared library on the server. 

So....now everything is playing back just fine whether its in the local database or using the File open command.

However, this raises the question why playing back from the server library doesn't work but the local library on the client does work.

If you're playing back from a server, make sure there is no conversion being done on the server.

Bingo!  It was the client settings under Media Network.  They were set to convert audio files.  Changing them to do not convert did the trick.

Is there a reason for that? We have the option to bitstream DSD, so it's not that bitstreaming can't work for audio playback.
I have some playback devices which only have an optical output (not HDMI) so MC currently has to downmix to stereo for the files to play at all.

Just ripped another disc: 3.36GB for MKV, 480MB for MKA.
The "video" portion is nothing but static images containing the track names.
 
Please support DTS/AC3 bitstreaming for audio files.
