The little things
« on: April 11, 2015, 07:52:29 am »

I was playing to my headphones and the volume wasn't really high enough.

I had 'Volume Leveling' enabled and it was cutting the level too much.

So then I dug through DSP Studio and saw 'Adaptive Volume'.  Hey, I bet that would be just the ticket.  I turned on 'Adaptive Volume' in 'Peak Level Normalize' mode and everything is wonderful.

Sometimes the little touches make all the difference.

Volume leveling is great so long as you have enoght gain headroom. With headphones connected to a DAC, the gain is not high enough without peak level normalize. Maybe there could be a "headphone mode" for volume leveling?

Anything louder than the -23 LUFS target would start to work against the benefits of the R128 system, as you would be running out of headroom and playback would start to become uneven.
I do think that we need controls to adjust the target, but combining Volume Leveling with Peak Normalization should give the best possible results if you have run out of amplification.
