Volume the same across tracks?
« on: April 11, 2015, 03:50:20 pm »

I wish to record tracks/playlist onto a reel to reel recorder. I want to keep all the tracks at the same volume so I don't have to adjust the record levels on each track on the tape machine.
Is there a way to do this on JRiver without compromising sound quality?

DSP->Volume Levelling [ON]

Assuming you've analysed audio on all tracks (Tools->Library Tools->Analyze Audio) this will apply R128 volume levelling and all tracks will be similar volume.

So I load a play list, analyse audio then check volume levelling in dsp ?

I have been setting the record level for each track separately on my reel to reel and it gets quite tiresome trying to fill a 10.5'' reel.

mark_h's method relies on the audio being digitised. That way Analyse Audio can do it's thing.

I'm struggling to see how this can work for an analogue source easily.

BTW, kudos for having an R2R system. When I bought my first system years ago, I went straight to CD. So I've been a digital Philistine from the start.

Its not from an analogue source, I use Audacity to record from analogue sources to PC but If I wanted to record from say my turn table to reel to reel I use the tape loop on my amp, no need to digitise it.

What I am doing is recording from my PC via my amp to my r2r, so recording straight off JR's library.

The R2R is gotta be the nicest source I have providing I get nice recordings on it.

Is Volume Levelling a replay gain? I think im losing some quality when using it, does it effect dynamic range?

It is like replay gain but it isn't changing dynamic range or adding compression.  It's just Normalizing track volumes so that they are much closer to each other (it will generally make the tracks quieter overall)
