I am running JRiver on a Samsung Series 5 laptop, connected to my DAC (which supports up to 192 kHz/24 bit input) via the HDMI output from my laptop. I have a hardware device that separates the audio signal from the HDMI signal and inputs that to the DAC via SPDIF.

Previously, I have successfully played files at 192 kHz using Intel WASAPI. But now, I am limited to 48 kHz output via Intel WASAPI. I would appreciate any suggestions for what I need to do to restore the ability to play full HD audio. Do I need to update/reinstall the Intel audio driver ?

What is the DAC model? My DAC (Teac UD501) plays up to 384kHz sampling rates via the USB beautifully with ASIO drivers (MC knocks down 705kHz and 1.4 MHz sample rate dff/dsf files down to 384kHz for my DAC nicely too but plays native 384kHz and lower files with no DSP conversions), (since the DAC only goes up to 384kHz). But my DAC stops at 96kHz on the TOS port. So obviously I only use USB.

If the published spec of your DAC indeed goes above 48kHz. Then I would say use ASIO instead of WASAPI as a first try. Are you using the Coboc HDMI audio extractor by any chance? Most small HDMI extractors only go up to 48 or 96kHz so you'd never get to 192 on the extraction anyway. Also is the source file 192 (or greater)? Also the HDMI port on your laptop might be resampling it back down from the get go.

If all else fails, I would say dump HDMI as a transport for the audio completely and go USB with ASIO drivers.

Thanks for your reply. The DAC is the Qx module of a Cyrus 8xpdqx. It is specified up to 192 kHz and, previously with the same laptop, worked at that speed. The audio extractor is a Neet HA-110SAN. I suspect that the HDMI driver may have been overwritten or updated because it no longer lists frequency options up to 192kHz (stopping now at 48kHz).

S/PDIF in its original form is quite limited. If the PC thinks it is outputting to S/PDIF or TOSlink it may well restrict the output to 48kHz.

Assuming that you haven't changed any hardware since it used to work, and that it definitely did work before, is it possible that both the HDMI and S/PDIF outputs are visible to MC, and you changed the output from HDMI to S/PDIF?

If MC thinks it is outputting to HDMI then it should allow 24/192 output. If the HA-110SAN is capable of converting 24/192 from HDMI to S/PDIF and the DAC is capable of taking 24/192 input via S/PDIF, then you should get the full sound. If you are not, try disconnecting the HA-110SAN, configuring MC to output to HDMI at 24/192 (even if the output isn't connected to anything), then once MC is happy with that, connect the HA-110SAN again and see if it all works.

Perhaps it's a limitation of the HDMI audio extractor your using. It may only support 48khz audio. (I would say that's more likely a cause than anything else)

I have a HDMI audio extractor too that has a switch to switch between 5.1 and 2ch. I'm guessing it switches the sample rate from 48khz for multichannel 5.1 to 192khz for 2ch and yours may not support 2ch. I'll check mine out and let you know.

I tried the Pi2 HDMI out to my HDMI audio extractor and could only get 5.1 48k and 2ch 48k output but that may be a limitation of the configuration of the Pi rather than the audio extractor.

Thanks to all for your advice. The HDMI to SPDIF is specified to work at 192kHz, and did so previously. I suspect that updating my drivers has removed the 192kHz capability from Intel HDMI WASAPI, so I may need to locate an older driver.
