How to add Review to Tags
« on: May 12, 2015, 02:06:18 am »

Hi
I brought a new PC which was well overdue.
Previously I had "Review" in my tags which I use a lot.
Would you please explain to me how I can get it back?
Many thanks

Probably a custom tag
In Tools > Library add a field called Review

Hi Vincent

I did what you suggested and it was okay till I went to save it then I received this message
"Audio File cannot be Read-Only" so I have to Cancel & lose my Review field

I have already unchecked the read only on my Audio Files in Explorer, but when it finished making the changes the read only was still checked.

Do you have any thoughts on how to change stubborn read only files which is preventing me from tagging files

This is a good description of how to take permissions on files:

Thanks for your assistance Vincent & Glynor which I followed.... But my music files are still read only

Under Full Control I have them all bar two which are the ones I need read & execute and Modify

One strange thing is when  I open properties it straight away starts running through the files before I even have a chance to uncheck read only

Once again the command line is the guaranteed way (open as administrator)

Attrib -R c:\folder\*.* /s

One thing to note...

You cannot mark folders in Windows as read-only, and the read-only checkbox for folders always shows the "gray" state (to indicate that some files within might be, or might not be, read-only).

Otherwise... A couple screenshots might help.

Type cmd in the search bar (start menu)

When you see the icon labelled cmd, right click and run as administrator.  The little black window will come up

Type in exactly

attrib -R c:\folder\*.* /S

Except, change c:\folder to match the directory you are trying to change.  You can even do

attrib -R c:\*.* /S

which will do the whole drive letter

(I would recommend NOT changing the entire c: drive since that is where windows is.  If the music is on c: then choose the folder like the first example, if the music is on another drive it should be ok,to do the whole drive)

Hi Fergal

I got into the little black window and copied your first example at the end of the windows system line which was the only place it would let me.
I added C:\Noels Music

However if that was right.. there was no way I could find to save it?

Wow. Ok. Close the command line window and don't open it again.

Read my link above on how to make a screenshot. Lightscreen is easy to install and works really nicely. I'd recommend that method.

Then, follow this:

1. Find C:\Noels Music on your hard drive in Windows Explorer, and right-click on it and choose Properties.
2. In the dialog that appears, click the Security Tab.
3. Take a screenshot of this window.
4. Click on Advanced down at the bottom.
5. Take another screenshot.

Post the screenshots.  If you are on Windows 8, while you are in there, you can also take Ownership of the whole folder, and all sub-files and folders, this way:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2808-take-ownership-file-folder-drive-registry-key-windows-8-a.html#option4

You need to own the files in there. If you copied them from another computer, the old user on the old computer probably still "owns" them as far as Windows is concerned.

If you took ownership, tell us what happened. If you get any errors, post screenshots of them.

Thanks for the screenshots.  That explains things.

I don't have time to write up an explanation right now, but I will. If you haven't heard back by tomorrow, post in this thread again and remind me.

You have a folder "- library one -" whose name starts and ends with a dash ("-"). That is an unusual name. I have not seen this done before.
Could this be the cause of the problem?

The problem is D:\ and has nothing to do with this actual file locations on C. Look at his third screenshot.

Hi Glynor

After I put the screen shot up of Media Center I noticed some of the file locations had changed to D:\ and I have changed them back to C:\ so that's not the problem.
I have since tried changing a file say genre in MC Playing now, previously it would not allow me because the file is read only. However I can now do this with any file in Media Center.

Then I had another try at adding a new field Review where it said "Audio File Location cannot be Read-Only" but now it doesn't bring up that notice and I can add it. Unfortunately it shows up under tags blank.
In light of the fact I can now alter tags in MC I wonder if although all my files under Noels music still show read only that they maybe they are not.
