I use Microsoft Security Essentials... but I unless I reboot daily (scheduled), I get static with MC within a few days.  I have clearly matched the static from MC to MSE.  I blame MSE....

Have you tamed MSSE?
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender

I use Windows Defender (and MSSE long before it) and have never had any similar issue, certainly not with audio. It sounds almost like it is an incompatibility between MSSE and your DAC.  You didn't say which one, but the fact that it is cleared by a reboot strongly indicates that the audio driver is involved somehow.

MC itself doesn't do anything special at bootup, except maybe launch itself. But if it was some kind of conflict with MC, then restarting just MC (including exiting the tray Media Server, if enabled, of course) would have the same effect.

In any case, my gut instinct says that, if it is a conflict with MSSE, then it is between your DAC's driver and MSSE, not MC and MSSE.

Regarding this:

proceed or disregard?

I've seen that once or twice before (with MC and at least one or two other applications). That's how Microsoft collects data on applications to improve MSSE/Defender's heuristics. If anyone sees something like that, from Microsoft's or another AV vendor's product, you should absolutely submit MC, and make sure to mark it as "safe" if they ask for your opinion on the situation.

AV applications are... Well, I've gone into details before, but they are riddled with "exceptions for" and "special casing for" all sorts of applications. Without it, applications as common as Microsoft Word and Adobe After Effects would never be able to run properly with AV interfering (and you can see this sometimes when you run betas of even big apps like those). The way the AV vendors collect information on what apps they might be "blocking" (or need to block) when they haven't seen the product before, is though these mechanisms. This is a good way to get them the information they need to make sure their product doesn't interfere with MC (or, at least, not as badly).

That's what I've always done too and never had a problem.  If you rip content to disk, I'd suggest adding the ripping software .exe to the processes tab and the rip-to folder in the folder tab.

so, i decided to send it as suggested, however every day since my original post security essentials has asked me again about jriver. So today i added all details mentioned here - http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender

question please...

I'm assuming on JRiver clients being the client libraries are empty one just needs to follow steps identical to wiki, and not enter library locations?

Meaning just the server would have each HDD location in exclude files & locations?

Also does one want to exclude photo/thumb locations as well?

Thanks for clarification.

I've been getting this a lot over the past week too, never had it before. Even though I keep submitting it, it pops up again.  I decided to have a look in the MSE settings as I had already "tamed" it with the recommended exclusions, but was surprised to find there was nothing there.

I wonder if a recent Windows update has reset everything?

i dont even want to begin harping on my thoughts of the newest Windows updates, and them forcing users to 10.

BS in my book.

I spent considerable time last week or 2 removing their spam from all our machines, and clients machines... maybe there is something left behind from the steps i took or as you suggested another update that's causing this popup every day?

Link below is what i used to remove their spam. ( i will not be getting into a discussion if this is spam or not, for I have my opinions, and my opinion along with others throughout the net is it's 100% spam... Marketing spam)

PS. csimon i read your lengthy reply in regards to voice control, thank you for this, i been really busy here lately, but plan on reading up in their forums, and replying back to you in thread once i get myself caught up... again ty for reply there.

Client copies of MC cache the remote Library here:
%AppData%\J River\Media Center 20\Connected Library

Even if you're using a copy of MC in client-only mode, you'd be best off excluding the entire Media Center 20 AppData directory.

I've been getting a lot of this lately on my office computers (Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection, I guess it is the enterprise version of MSE? It looks identical). Sometimes several times a day, and even with seconds/minutes interval.

The problem is that it can not be tamed, our IT responsibles have made sure even starting the application as admin doesn't give any rights to make any changes. Is there anything that can be done?

I've been getting this every day on my Win 7 machines, but not on any of my win 8 machines.  Taming MSE has not solved the issue, and it seems to be interfering with JRiver's functioning.  I've been getting weird errors from MC and heightened memory and CPU use from MSE which suggests that it's not honoring my instructions to ignore the four Media Center executables/processes.

I don't have and Win7 machines left that run MSSE...

I'm not seeing anything unusual on my Win8.1+Defender machines.

Apparently, you can configure MSSE to do this automatically without prompting.

In MSSE, go to the Settings Tab, and then Advanced.  Check Send file samples automatically when further analysis is required.

As shown here:

Any progress on this one guys? It's interfering on my HTPCs which are supposed to operate in Theater View only, except MSE pops up, requiring a keyboard or mouse.

Cheers

There's nothing JRiver can do. Tell Microsoft.

Opting out of MAPS would probably prevent this from happening on your system, if you don't want to automatically send potential threats to Microsoft for analysis.

That said, I wonder if it could be related to the recent Windows Store fraud.
Perhaps that person was distributing a malware-infested version of MC?

I'd assumed that a software vendor talking to Microsoft about a problem affecting a number of its users would carry more weight than an individual user..... I'd have thought that JRiver would have been on the case already. I'm guessing life's not that simple :-)

Maybe I am missing it ... I have had this for a week or so on win 8.1 it looks like some win update has changed how defender works and it sees jriver mc as some sort of nasty

Is it prep on ms side for win 10

My guess is once it's analyses and setes it ok it will stop

Naive maybe ...

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender

Not directed at you, but would it be possible to get the installer to do this.  The 4 processes are always known, plus the default library location.

Obviously the files are in xxx\Media Center 20\xxx.exe, so if you upgrade to MC21, your taming efforts are undone as you need to (remember to) re-tame it for each version.

The application can pre-configure the Windows Firewall when you first setup Media Sharing, so surely it can do Windows Defender.  The exclusions are just registry entries.

I don't know if there's an API to do that, like there is for the Firewall.  If not, then no.  Even if you can hack it with registry entries, that's asking for trouble (Microsoft could change that at any time, and different versions may behave differently).
