JRiver MC18 and Atmos
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:16:14 am »

I don't know if this is the right place for this question but here it goes.
I only have a 5.1 system, and to be honest, I really don't see me going beyond that for a long time.  I know that Atmos will only play back starting with a 7.1 system.  I also know that if had an Atmos disk, and I played it back on my system in my OPPO, it would downgrade to a TRUHD signal.  I only have an Integra 80.3 which does not play Atmos tracks.

I also know that MC18 does not play back Atmos tracks.  I would need MC20 for that.  But, on the Atmos disks, they have a Dolby Digital option.  That's the one I use.  It seems to be a high bit rate track.  I only have 2 Atmos disks right now,  TF4 and The Expendables 3.  There are only like 8 out so far and those are the only two I have.  Since I can't get an Atmos track anyway because I don't have a 7.1 system, and because I really have a hard time telling the difference between a TRUHD track and the Dolby Digital tracks that come on Atmos disks, is there a real compelling argument for me to spend the money to upgrade to MC20 at this point?

I would be curious as to what people think  :).  I should note that I am happy with how MC18 works for me.
Thanks
