i too am looking forward to VCD support. For this to be an all around media center, i think vcd playback is not a far fetched request

Count me among those who'd benefit from VCD implementation!

Guys ,

A thread a couple of day s ago discussed this.

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=display;num=1058700186

The problem is that the .dat extension is also used by sytem files etc and has caused issues in the past.

True, Graham, and thanks for answering, but I think we will need to do something to solve this problem soon.  Maybe we will add the dat file type but not turn it on for import unless the user specifically checks it.

People have reported that renaming dat files as mpg files works.  It's also possible to modify the registry entry for what file types MC supports.

Renaming .dat file to .mpg to indeed work. I am also been hoping for the implementation of support for VCDs for a while already. :) Hope this gets support real soon.

Yup renaming it works.. I reported this in early beta versions of 9.1... but could you shed some light on what the registry setting is?  where it is in the registry... it'd be nice if we had an advanced option to manually add media types or something...

Thanks

I would like this also.

Can I just say that the dat extension being a system extension shouldn't matter if MC9 added VCD support.

VCD's and SVCD's have a particular folder structure similar to a DVD which allows them to be played in settop players and some DVD software. You would just need MC9 to detect a VCD disc based on these contents and then play either the .dat (VCD) or .mpg (SVCD.)

The would be no need to browse to and specifically play a .dat file.

Cheers
