TV Tuner and MC

Hi, I have an i5-4690 system with a TBS 6928 satellite tuner with a Cam module and smartcard from CanalDigitaal (The Netherlands).
The card seems to work, having an S2 satellite tuner and CI module on one card is good, but the TBS software is awful and the manual worse than that. I can watch channels, also HD and encrypted channels (in so far as covered by my card) with the TBS software, picture quality is poor and HD runs poorly, many dropped frames. I believe (hope) the TBS software to be at fault.... which is OK, since I aim to use MC18 anyway!
However, under JRiver, I can scan for channels, but whenever I want to select a smartcard channel, it claims there is "no tuner available" ( no other software that might claim the tuner seems to be running).
Also, under configuration, I can tick the box "S2 tuner", but the setting seems to be lost the moment I leave....
Also I just found that MC does not seem to support encrypted channels yet.... that would make the whole tuner useless to me!

I'd be grateful for tips...

There have been so many improvements in TV functionality since MC18, it just doesn't make sense to continue using it for that purpose. Upgrade to MC21.

However, you are correct that MC doesn't support encrypted channels, and probably never will. A quick search around the forum and you will find out why. It has been discussed many times, including recently.

PS: I don't have any encrypted channels, so I'm no expert. I've just read what others have been saying.

Just installed MC 2.0 because I want to switch to Win10 and search an alternative for Win7+MCE.
I have been using MCE with my Anysee E30 and a Digitenne card to watch the Dutch ebcrypted channels.

I now read your statement that JRiver MC never will support encrypted channels, so my only option is to stay with Win7+MCE?

Well I said "probably never will", based on what has been said by JRiver personnel over the last few years.

Search around the forum for "encrypted" and you should find lots of information, if not a solution.

I don't know of an alternate software solution to WMC for encrypted channels, but there may be some out there. Sorry I can't be more help.

From what I know, you need to support the CAMs in every specific DVB-S/C tuner card though, as there is no central standard to use, so its quite a bit messy (for example, TBS linked above have their own SDK to work with, and so do other vendors)

First step would be investigating first which devices are the most popular and are even worth supporting.

I am hardly an expert, but I do not believe that the situation with CI modules is anywhere near that bad: the whole point of the CI (Common Interface) is that.... well is that it is common!
You put a module into that, and slide the card of your TV company into that module. So... the whole point is that you can have whole lots of encryption protocols, each with their cards and yet not bother with interfaces for each, but manufacturers of TV cards and other stuff can easily implement the software to deal with CI module, without having to bother with the modules and card "behind it", much like using DX11 instead of taking to a video card.
For instance, I have a Samsung bluray player  bought in Germany that I currently use with this module + card.

Should prove to be a rather low hurdle for you guys, once you put your mind to it....
I suspect the U.S. centric setup of the JRiver is the main point that has kept you guys back here. It might well be that you need to support scores of different interfaces in the USA and other countries, but again, I believe that is not the case in Europe.

I don't think we're trying to be U.S. centric.  We just do the development we can and the TV area has a lot of standards to choose from.

A big obstacle for development is that we have nothing to test against.  We don't get the signals you do.

Hi Jim, do not take me the wrong way, but the remark about not being able to test the signals is exactly what I meant by that.... it is difficult to test TV reception unless you are in the area, which is different from something like a video format where I could just send you an example. This would require having specialists in many different regions... difficult!
As for CI interface however, may be used without having the actual signal available. I may not be telling you anything you new here, but just in case....https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Interface
