My Modern Cards skin forks
« on: August 06, 2016, 11:01:21 am »

So, here's a thread for my Modern Cards forks.

Some notes about these skins:

  • These are modified versions of Dihrael's great Modern Cards skins. All these skins work on Windows, Linux and Mac (though most work best for various Linux desktop managers!). All the other Modern Cards skins (Dark, Grey and White Editions) are included with Media Center 22 and above by default! Basically, these are the modified Modern Cards skins not included with Media Center 22 and above!
  • Consider these a work-in-progress, there's likely issues and I don't believe I finished converting the color scheme. So there's likely to be inconsistencies (please do report any you notice!).
  • These support scaling (yay!) and Retina Mode on the Mac (double yay?).
  • There's a Adwaita skin and a Adwaita Dark skin for GNOME 3 (since the default theme for GNOME is Adwaita), there's a Ubuntu Ambiance skin for Ubuntu (which is based on GNOME now), there's a Ubuntu Yaru skin for the new Yaru theme Ubuntu uses by default, there's a Arc Theme skin (based on the amazing Arc Theme), there's a Adapta Theme skin (based on the great Adapta Theme), there's a KDE Plasma Breeze skin, there's a Raspbian PIXEL Blue and Grey themes (for Raspberry Pi/Raspbian users), there's a Mint-X Cinnamon skin and a Mint-Y Cinnamon skin (the two default themes for Linux Mint) and a Elementary OS skin! In addition to those skins based on Linux display managers, there's an updated version of Dihrael's Modern Cards: Light Edition skin included (supports the new tag window, some bug fixes, etc.) and a Modern Cards: Dark Legacy Edition skin based on the old Modern Cards: Dark Edition skin that was recently updated and refined in later builds of Media Center 26.
  • The Elementary OS skin lacks a minimize button - it's assumed you just use the dock itself to minimize/restore windows. So because of that, there's no minimize button. There is, however, close/maximize/restore buttons!
  • Tested on Windows, macOS and Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch Linux) but they're intended for Linux users even though they *can* be used on Windows and macOS.
  • Also included below are links to the Acrylic series of skins for the Windows 10 Fluent Design aesthetic; Acrylic Dark Edition, Acrylic Grey Edition, Acrylic Light Edition and Acrylic White Edition!
  • All the Modern Cards Linux skins, the Modern Cards Acrylic skins along with the Modern Cards: Light Edition and Modern Cards: Dark Legacy Edition skins support the new waveform seekbar in MC26!
  • Only the Adwaita, Adwaita Dark, Ubuntu Ambiance (GNOME), Ubuntu Yaru, Arc Theme, Adapta Theme, KDE Plasma Breeze, Raspbian PIXEL Blue and Grey, Mint-X Cinnamon, Mint-Y Cinnamon, Light Edition, Legacy Dark Edition and Elementary OS skins are included in this pack!!!!

How To Install (Windows):

Drop the folders into C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 24\Skins\Standard View (or 20/21/22/23/etc.) if using the 32-bit build on 64-bit Windows or C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 24\Skins\Standard View (or 20/21/22/23/etc.) if using 64-bit build on 64-bit Windows or 32-bit build on 32-bit Windows allowing it to override/merge the files if prompted.

How To Install (Mac):

Right click on the Finder icon on the dock, then select Go to Folder... and input ~/Library then press the blue Go button. From there go into the Application Support folder, then the J River folder, then choose the Media Center folder you’re using (Media Center 21 for MC 21, Media Center 22 folder for MC 22, Media Center 23 folder for MC23, Media Center 24 for MC24, etc.) then go into the Skins folder then the Standard View folder. Finally drag the contents (the three skins folders) inside ModernCardsAdditionalSkins2.4.zip into the Standard View folder. Once they’re there, open Media Center, go to the View menu then select Skin and choose one of the new Modern Cards skins!

How To Install (Linux):

Drag and drop everything from the .zip file into the ~/.jriver/Media Center 24/Skins/Standard View (or 20/21/22/23/etc.) folder. You'll likely have to go to the Home directory, enable hidden folders (CTRL+H) and go from there.

Enjoy!

Nice work on those, the dark version is very useable.

Did you give any consideration to skinning the experimental tag window too?

Huh, I didn't even know it could be skinned. I'll try to look into it next week.

It's just three images and some xml and well worth the time.

Talking of xml... are the notes yours, or Dirhael's?

this one...
"<!-- TODO: Is there any way to make sure the "triangle" control doesn't show up in a splitter, without having to make "VericalHandle" a stupidly tall image? There probably is, but how?! -->"

So, just poking around in the xml for the dark edition...
I reduced the handle from 8000 pixels high to 16 pixels, then, in the xml, near the end of the "MainFrame" section, you'll see a "Splitter" entry there with three values. Setting those all to "171717" to match the splitter colour makes the little triangles disappear.

I do not know why the triangles on the splitters are not maintained in the "Splitter" block. Skinning for MC is an adventure :)

Dirhael's.

It very much is, that's for sure! :P

I've already made a work-in-progress Ubuntu Ambiance skin, however I don't believe I can keep the window gradient as when you scale the skin will reuse MainFrame_TopBorder over and over again (which is ugly), instead of trying to stretch it.

Being able to use something like SVGs though, that would be very handy for all this. :D

Oh snap, an update. There's several new skins including a Ubuntu Ambiance skin and a Arc Theme skin - both supporting scaling! Plus there's countless tweaks to the Adwaita, Grey and White skins. :D

I'll see if I can do Mint-X and Mint-Y (which is based off and inspired by the Arc Theme). Maybe Ubuntu's Radiance if I have enough time. Maybe even XFCE is I can stand using it (I don't like XFCE, honestly).

Finally, I'm really, really going to try skinning the experimental tag window this week (time permitting) and see how that turns out.

I found the dark edition quite useable, but not 'quite right' for me personally, so set about tweaking it a little bit.

If you like, you can either use the ETW files attached with this code...
Code: [Select]
  <TAGWINDOW>
  <Entry Name="Group" Bitmap="TagWindow_Group.png" NumberImages="2" Columns="20,?-Flex,10" Rows="1,?-Flex,1" Cells="B1-HTILE,B2-HTile,B3-HTILE" />
  <Entry Name="Field" Bitmap="TagWindow_Field.png" Scale="4" NumberImages="2" Rows="4,?-Flex,4" />
  <Entry Name="FieldLabel" Bitmap="TagWindow_FieldLabel.png" Scale="4" NumberImages="1" Columns="?-Flex" Rows="?-Flex" Cells="A1-Tile" />
</TAGWINDOW>

Also in the attached zip is a greyscaled selection image which, for me, works better than the default blue. It just needs a line added to the list section:
Code: [Select]
<Entry Name="Lasso" Bitmap="List_Lasso.png" NumberImages="1" Margins="3,3,3,3" />
I put the psd files for the etw in there too. Entirely optional and free to use as you wish. I do not need any credit/mention or otherwise.

Small update with the Linux skins.

I think this topic can be moved to the Third Party Plug-ins, Programs, and Skins section now. ;)

I do have a working Mint-X skin... however, it doesn't look like Cinnamon/Mint-X does HiDPI (double) scaling properly - when enabled system-wide it just stretches and resizes the close/minimize/maximize/restore buttons, which is rather ugly. Because of that there's no 2X button images for MC - there's no need, the resizing of the 1X images matches what the system (or at least the theme) natively seems to do.

EDIT: Okay, figured it out. You have to reboot Mint for the properly scaled images to take effect system-wide. Which means the Mint-X theme for MC can proceed now. :D

EDIT 2: Mint-X theme done, needs testing.

Okay, added and posted a link to the Linux skins above. I've removed the already available Grey and White skins (just use the latest MC22!). These skins are intended for MC for Linux, however they *can* be used on Windows and macOS.

Included are the Adwaita (GNOME 3 default theme) Edition, the Arc Theme Edition, the Cinnamon Mint-X Edition and the Ubuntu Ambiance Edition. There's also buttonless (which don't have close/minimize/maximize/restore buttons in the main window) edition of the Arc Theme Edition and Ubuntu Ambiance Edition, which is intended mainly for Ubuntu when MC is maximized (as the system will draw the buttons in the top left corner - there's no reason to have two sets of buttons!). So these should now basically cover the main GNOME/Unity/Cinnamon themes. :D

Enjoy!

Tried Elementary OS 0.4 Loki today and enjoyed it, so there's now an Elementary OS skin for MC! ;)

NOTE: Elementary OS, by default, lacks minimize, maximize and restore buttons and only uses a close button, hence this skin only uses a close button and not any others!

Updated the Elementary OS skin. It didn't lack maximize/restore buttons after all - they were just on the opposite side of the window (yup, I really must be going blind to have missed that!). Nonetheless, the Elementary OS skin has close, maximize and restore buttons. Still no minimize button, as I'm assuming they intend users to maximize by clicking on the icons in the dock. So yeah, no minimize button!

An update!

- All skins now support the experimental/new tag window.
- There's an updated/modified version of Dihrael's Modern Cards: Light Edition skin included. Includes support for the new tag window and small bug fixes.
- The custom Data folders for custom images is no longer needed, everything has been merged into the main skin.
- The Arc Theme skin was renamed to Arc. Just sounds better that way, IMO. ;)

EDIT: Reverted the Arc Theme to Arc name change in a later update.

Well, three of them (Dark, Grey and White) are included with the 22.0.88 update, yes. And yes, they were also updated for the new tag window (and fixed a few bugs). My remaining forked/modified Modern Cards skins are in the download link in the first post above.

You'd likely have to fork off and modify the skin yourself to get them to work/appear.

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Standard_View_Skinning_Tutorial

Pay attention to the part about splitters. You can also compare how the splitter files look, e.g. compare Modern Cards to Noire. Also pay attention to any changes in main.xml required to get it working correctly, as noted above by Marko. Personally, I don't like triangles on the splitters, so it works good for me. :D

Another small update to reflect text color support for <TAGWINDOW> - you'll have to wait for the next public updates of MC22 for Windows, Mac and Linux for the text color changes to properly take effect!

I agree that visually it certainly looks cleaner and better without them. I actually thought (when posting my question) that something was broken on my end because I had not used a skin without the arrows before :D

I like the functionality of clicking the arrow to have the view expand fully and then click again to have it reset to the exact way it was before without having to manually click, hold and drag it back and forth in order to get it to the previous position. Is there any other way to do this (without clicking arrows)? I couldn't find any keyboard shortcuts or anything.

Off-topic: There are some toolbar buttons that you can put on the screen, like "Toggle Tree" for instance that I use and basically functions in the same way. What if there were buttons for "Toggle View 1", "Toggle View 2" and "Toggle View 3"? Wonder if that could be implemented?

Hover the mouse on the edge (when the mouse becomes a horizontal two-way arrow) and double click and it'll toggle it open and closed.

Oh yeah, one last small final update.

Alrighty, an update, with two new skins!

- United Theme and United Darker Theme! These are based on and inspired by the United GNOME project, which is the GNOME Shell theme I'm running on Ubuntu GNOME 17.04!
- Made a fix to the Modern Cards: Light Edition skin where there minimize/maximize/restore/close buttons wouldn't appear on Linux (by default they will use the Windows buttons).

Finally, there's a chance the "buttonless" versions of Arc and Ubuntu Ambience will go away once Ubuntu moves away from Unity back to GNOME. It all depends what Canonical does with GNOME, e.g. if they decide to port over Ambience with the ability to have buttons in the top bar like Unity when windows are maximized. If they don't do it, there's no point having the buttonless versions anymore.

Improved the United Theme and United Darker Theme skins greatly!

EDIT: Another update again, improved those two skins even more!

Updates.

Dropped the United Theme skins, along with the Arc Theme (Buttonless) skin. Once Ubuntu 17.10 comes out (which defaults to GNOME 3 and drops Unity) depending on what they do, the buttonless Ubuntu Ambiance theme will probably be dropped as well. It just depends on how well the Ambience theme looks and works on GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 17.10. Also I'm cutting the amount of skins back due to lack of time these days - I'm going to stick to the common OSes/themes I'm using.

Improved the Mint-X theme skin with some main.xml changes and fixed up the search box (which looks native to Mint-X now). Since I replaced Ubuntu with Linux Mint on my main machine, I decided to finally fix a couple things here. So yeah, the Mint-X theme skin looks pretty much native now.

Small update, made changes under the hood (to make they don't have the same issue(s) as the Grey Edition skin has).

I do plan on updating the ElementaryOS skin once I have more time. I feel like I can make it feel more "native", especially the search bar.

Skinsand themesfor Theater view... (Galaxy skin/theme)
« Reply #26 on: July 22, 2017, 12:13:11 pm »

Thanks for the forks of these skins.
I just started installing Ubuntu 17.04 a few days ago and after installing MC 23.019, I saw the skins included.
Coming from Windows, the theater view screen I use is the galaxy skin and theme.
Will copying these to the Ubuntu folder where the skins and theme are in Linux mess up anything?
If not possible, then
Is there any way to include this theme and skin with the build?
I can do this, but I being new to Linux, I am not comfortable with it yet.
If it will not mess up anything to copy over from Windows, let me know please.
Thanks.

The skins all have folders with unique names.  Just copy the skin files to a new folder.

An update to the skin pack.

1. Updated the Adwaita skin search bar to look more native. That should be all the skins now (not sure how I missed this until now!).
2. Updated the Arc Theme and the Light Edition skins' status bar font colors to be more light. Also updated the separator colors to be more light.

An update!

There is now a Ubuntu Ambiance (GNOME) theme for Ubuntu 17.10 and above. The old Ubuntu Ambiance skin was renamed to Ubuntu Ambiance (Unity) and it (along with the buttonless Unity variant) are more-or-less at the end-of-life now since Unity is in the process of being phased out in favor of GNOME.

There was probably other little fixes and tweaks to the other skins, but I can't remember specifics. :P

Enjoy!

How exactly would a "Arc Dark" variant look like? Just a fully dark version of the Arc Theme?

I'd like to do more skins, but I've been pretty busy lately to get anything done although I did almost complete an Adapta version of the skin. But yeah, total lack of time to get anything fully done. =\

Slight updates.

1. Splitters with triangles/arrows had to be added to workaround issues with some views, e.g. split views. They're as subtle as possible, but they're there now. Thanks to Marko for these fixes!
2. Decided to finally EOL (end-of-life) the Ubuntu Ambience (Unity) themes, since Ubuntu has dropped Unity in favor of GNOME. If you need the Unity skins, I've left the link to the old versions above.

Slight updates.

Hey there, the "Please Wait..." text in the pop-up window (of same name) is missing text color. Only checked with White Edition, though.

Just in case it could potentially grow into some kind of Skynet situation in the future.

Will take a look when I get a chance. Though, if it's happening with the skins bundled with MC itself, might be better to report the skin issue(s) in the release topics.

Another slight update.

1. All skins now have visible splitters, like the Modern Cards: Dark Edition and Modern Cards: Grey Edition skins do. If you don't like having visible splitters, I've left a link to the old version above.

I also have some 'newer' skins I've been working on for Windows, especially Windows 10. But more info on that later on...

So, the 'newer' skins I was alluding to...

Since Hendrik was nice enough to re-enable the glass transparency effects used in skins like Noire Glass on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, I thought I'd take a shot experimenting with creating a couple semi-transparent Modern Cards skins, based on Fluent Design Acrylic look found in Windows 10. I tried very hard to get these as close as possible to the Acrylic effect Windows 10 uses in some of the Modern app windows. Though it's worth mentioning that I wasn't able to get the gaussian blur effect working like it does in Windows 10, so it won't match that aspect of it. But the color, blending, noise, etc. should come pretty close. If anyone is a graphic artist and has ideas for getting the gaussian blur effect working in PNG images without needing a background image (or the use of CSS code), be sure to let me know!

The result of these experiments was the Modern Cards Acrylic skins consisting of Grey, Light and White. These skins will only work with Media Center 24.0.54 and above on Windows. These skins are also only meant for use on Windows 10, since MC for Mac nor MC for Linux supports the glass effect in skins and these skins won't really look too well on Windows 7 and 8.1, IMO.

Download:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0c55i5fso0s4s0y/ModernCardsAcrylicSkins1.0.zip?dl=0

Enjoy!

P.S. Originally, I wanted to enable semi-transparency in MC's tree. While I was able to get it working, there was unavoidable glitches and issues when doing that. So I had to comment out the Tree_Background.png part in the skins' main.xml files. Maybe it'll get fixed someday, not sure.

P.P.S. I'll add some screenshots later, as I'm currently downloading Windows 10 1809 and my net connection is saturated. ;)

Alright, there's a small (yet very nice) update.

First, I've updated the Adwaita skin since the Adwaita theme for GNOME has been updated since I first created the skin. I also updated the minimize/maximize/restore/close button images however I didn't update the 2x button images yet! I've also tweaked the main.xml file and made it feel more like the Adwaita theme. I think it came out pretty well. ;)

Finally, there's now a Adwaita Dark skin! Since Adwaita Dark is the default theme for Fedora (while using GNOME) for example, I thought I might see if I can create a skin for it however like with the Adwaita update I didn't rip the 2x button images, so it lacks those completely until I get some more time. However, for a first version I think it turned out pretty well. ;)

I must be nuts. I gained a little more free time, and I thought oh what the heck and decided to try my hand with making a new skin for the new theme Ubuntu uses now, which is called Yaru. Well...

Like before, there's no 2x button images. I'll see if I can do them at some point. Nonetheless, the link is in the first post (two updates in one day!). Enjoy. :)

Oh snap, I'm at it again. Decided early this morning to see if I could quickly make a skin based on the new default theme for Linux Mint, Mint-Y. Well, I think I did pretty well in such a short amount of time!

Modern Cards: Cinnamon Mint-Y Edition

And again like before, there's no 2x button images. Getting back into skin creation is exciting, during the Christmas holiday weekend I might try to see if I can finally pull off a KDE Plasma Breeze skin. Link is in the first post, and as always enjoy. :)

That's....awesome Donkey lol! Please see my help request I posted earlier this morning as I had no idea anyone else was working on skins. I just happened to want to try it out from the Tutorial I found. Your skins are really nice...I don't know much about the inner working of Windows Modern look and I was wondering how to use it. Otherwise I'm just using regular flat layers.

Can you believe I'm still at it? I just can't stop since I'm having a blast! Okay, this time I got the default KDE Plasma theme Breeze skin done (finally, it was easier this time around). I know it looks a bit strange with the darker top bar part, but that's how the Breeze theme in KDE Plasma looks.

Modern Cards: KDE Plasma Breeze Edition

And once again, no 2x buttons. The *only* theme I can still think of is one for the Raspberry Pi (Raspbian). I'll see if I can do that next. Anyways the updated link is in first post, enjoy.

I had a go with Adwaita Dark here and it's still in use a couple of days on, so I guess I'm liking that one. Have already tweaked a couple of things that I couldn't cope with...
Changed 'gridlineback' to match the background, as I don't use that feature in my lists, and MC insists on using it in list type field menus, so that's that sorted. I've also toned down the 'hover bar' that follows the mouse in a list, as most often, MC will leave this showing in the list, giving the impression that something is selected, when it isn't.

Just those two so far, so thumbs up, great work AD.

Makes sense. Adwaita Dark is still using the dark elements from Modern Cards: Dark Edition. I do intend to go back into it during the holiday break and tweak it further to match the Adwaita Dark theme in GNOME. Same with the other ones too (though, I *kinda* did in the Mint-Y skin). Can you upload your changes? I'll happily merge them in. :)
