TV using PVR-250 does not work
« on: June 03, 2003, 11:56:40 am »

I installed an Hauppauge PVR-250 and set up its software.  It worked.  I upgraded everything from their web site and it worked (a little better).  I then brought up MC 9.173 and tried to use the TV tuner from there.  No luck, "error in HCWCCONV.AX" and nothing but black.

Does anybody know if this hardware will work with MC 9?  If so, what's the spell?  I need the magic.

TIA

This device is not supported. There are two issues,

1. It possibly uses VfW driver instead of WDM driver. Let me know if this is not the case.

2. It uses hardware encoding to output MPEG2 formatted video, which MC does not currently handle.

When will MC accept the PVR-250 or PVR-350?  This is the best card around . . . . .

PVR-250/350 are definitely the best cards out there. I'm hoping for MC support for these as well.

They may work with the last few builds of 10.0.

Recording will not work though.

I have MC Build 10.0.113, but it doesn't work with my TV card Hauppauge PVR350. When I click 'Scan' to search for channels I get the error 'Failed to play TV (unknown error)'.

What happens if you try entering a channel to play directly?

Do you have the latest driver from Hauppauge?

I have the latest drivers from Hauppauge installed.

Is there *any* PCI capture card that can record TV using Media Center?   I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't possible because of the working relationship MC has with TiVo.

This is explained clearly in MC help file. Information is also available on this board and elsewhere on JRiver site.

Most analog PCI and USB TV devices are supported, provided they use WDM drivers. For example, all ATI cards, most Hauppauge cards ...

MC supported TV cards long before MC supported TiVo.

No change.

When you did that, was there a dialog window asking you to select a video capture device? What did you select?

No, there was no dialog windows asking me to select a video capture device.
When I click scan, I first see a screen asking me if there is a physical audio-connection from my TV-tunercard to my soundcard. When I confirm that and click OK, I get the error 'Failed to play TV (unknown error). When I then click OK I get a screen telling me that MC encountered errors while trying to play the last several files and to make sure that the path in the media library points to the right location.
When I look in the TV Options menu under Advanced options, Video capture file, tab General, I see the logo from Hauppauge and version 1.17.250.21153.

I am running out of ideas. It looks like something is bad in tuner portion of your system. How about doing a complete reinstallation of Hauppauge driver? Follow instructions here http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/Support_body_pvr250-350.html#app

I already did a complete reinstallation of Hauppauge driver recently with the instructions you link to.
I don't have problems watching TV with the WinTV-application from Hauppauge. So I don't think there is something bad with the tuner portion of my system.

Elsewhere on this board there is an advice to use the command:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\TV\MJTVControl.dll"

After I have done that, when I try yo watch a channel that I manually added (scanning for channels doesn't work, see earlier in this thread), I see two things:
1.  The picture from the chosen channel (very good quality), but no sound and
"Failed to access TV tuner" with big green letters at the bottom of the TV-screen.
2. A window with the text (I tranlated the dutch text in English) "unknown software exception (0xc000008c) has occured in the application on location 0x77e53887"

Sorry, I only discovered a moment ago that the limited support for Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250/350 has not been included in the recent builds. Maybe Nikolay did not include it because it does not give full support for these devices yet.

However, having said that, you should not get crashes. The TV component included with most recent releases should give you stable video but without sound, as many other users have noticed a while back. You can check the file MJTVControl.dll to verify that it is of version 3.3.258.0.

The version of TV component that will give you sound is 3.3.259.0. If you would like to try it, I can email you.

Failed to access TV tuner
This usually happens to devices that have non-WDM drivers. I know that you installed the latest driver, so that should not be the issue, as it works on my machine. Did you install the driver directly downloaded from www.hauppauge.com? I mean it is not an European version is it? Another frequently seen cause of such error in TV tuner is the DirectX 9.0b bug that is fixed with installation of the hotfix I mentioned before. But you said you already installed the hotfix ...

Please send me the new version 3.3.259.0. I'll give you my emailadress.

I (living in the Netherlands) downloaded Hauppauge drivers from http://www.hauppauge.com/html/sw_pvr_250.htm#driver.
Is that another site (and thus other drivers) than the one you mentioned?
As I told you earlier I have the DirectX 9.0b hotfix installed.

The url and the page are both different from where I downloaded my driver. But the file names (pvr250_18_inf.zip, PVR250_18_22037.exe) as well as the instructions for downloading and installation are identical. So I do not know whether the drivers we use are actually the same.
Mine came from here:
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/Support_body_pvr250-350.html#app

UPDATE: I just checked the links on those pages. The download files are identical. For instance, one of the driver file is linked to http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/pvr250/pvr250_18_22037.exe

So I guess we have the same drivers.
I followed the instructions in your mail to replace the MJTVcontrol.dll.
The result is that I get no picture and no sound and 'Failed to access TV-tuner' and an application error.

From your previous post, you indicated you could access the TV Options property pages. If you go to "Advanced Properties" page, do you see "TV Tuner..." in the list? If you do see it, can you double-click on it and see what result you get?

I can't see TV Tuner in that list. The list contains the following items:
Audio Capture Filter
Video Capture Filter
Video Preview Pin
Deinterlacing

This is really strange. You are missing some of the standard interfaces of TV. Maybe it is DirectX, or something else on your system. Then again, you could play using WinTV2000  :(. The software provided by the hardware vendor may not neccessarily use the same DirectX interfaces. That may explain it.

You are missing three items on the list:

Video Crossbar...
TV Tuner...
TV Audio...

Can you try the checkbox "Enable Audio Mode Selection" on "Audio" page (the first page)?
Did you uncheck "There is a physical connection from my TV card to my sound card" checkbox? It is supposed to be unchecked for WinTV PVR 250/350.

I have unchecked "there is a physical....." (was checked)

When I click Reset on the "Advanced Properties" page, that screen turns grey and MC locks up.

I have checked the Enable Audio Mode Selection on "Audio" page.
I did not mean to say that you must check this checkbox. I meant that you could try checking it and see what happens. For example, do you get Stereo button enabled (if your particular TV channel is broadcast in stereo)?

This checkbox is optional. If you did not have "TV Audio" item in the listbox, then this checkbox may not give you anything useful either.

Unchecking it should allow you to have sound.

Yaobing,

I just remembered something. A while ago I saved particular settings of MC (I think concerning TV) in a separate file in a temporary directory on my harddisk. However I don't know anymore what settings it were and where they belonged originally, nor do I remember if I deleted them at the original location or just made a copy of them. Unfortunately I deleted the temporary directory, so I don't have them anymore.
Can you give me a clue on the kind of settings I might have lost (a particular file in one of the directories where MC is installed, or a key in the windows registry)?

Thanks. I found them.
May I ask you to look at the settings I have in that key of the registry, to see if there is something wrong that may cause the difficulties I have with watching TV in MC?
If yes, I'll send you the registry key bij email.

By all means, yes. Please send it.

But I have little hope in finding anything in it.  :)

A few days ago I asked you to click "Reset Devices" button, that would have reset all settings to default values. What has been going on on your computer is beyond MC TV settings. The driver refused to give MC its TV tuner interface. That seems to be

a) a driver problem;
b) computer system problem; or
c) something special about PVR 350.

Regarding c) - I have a PVR 250 which uses exactly the same driver as 350. Therefore natually I think if 250 works, 350 should work too. But then we can not be 100% sure until I can get hold of a 350 and try it on my computer.

Don't give up hope, just do not expect it to work too soon. :D
I am still working on it. Sooner or later we will figure out what the problem is.

Yaobing what build ver is support and is the demo ver 10.0.110?.
I'm sure you know about me and my web site www.shspvr.com
Keep in mind Yaobing there are two diff chipset Conexant CX23415 (iTVC15) and Conexant CX23416 (iTVC16).
All PVR 350 come with CX23415 and some PVR 250 come with CX23415 the best way to tell is by there tuner should be label model 48xxx where some PVR 250 come with CX23416 and there tuner are label model 32xxx and as for PVR 250MCE come with CX23416 with same label model 32xxx but it has few diff which has no IR port but dose come with A/V RCA jack and FM tuner.
There is new WinTV-PVR but it not 250MCE it tuner is label model 28xxx for now it just called WinTV-PVR Roslyn it dual chipset design should have a Conexant CX23880/CX23416 onboard.
Both 250/350 do use exactly the same driver.
Just wonder is there EPG plug-in for something like XMLTV?.

There is a TV scheduling plug-in for Media Center (written by someone else):

No, 10.0.110 does not support PVR 250/350. MC version 10.0.118 or later does.

This, and the fact it does not work for Berto puzzles me. I can view TV in MC with my PVR 250 just fine. But on Berto's machine, the program can not find IAMTVTuner interface. The DirectShow graph built on jhim machine is missing the entire upper stream, up from the Capture Filter.

My guest would be that Berto problem maybe due to he using a PAL setup that just a guest or he not using the very latest drivers 1.8.22037.
Berto take look at this http://www.shspvr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4494
When you say "missing the entire upper stream, up from the Capture Filter" I take that you ref to "Video/Muxed In" Filter Pin which for Hardware Decoder for TV Output on the PVR 350.
Then how go about getting newer demo? is one Media Center 10.0.122 list on this forum as a demo to?.
Thank JimH.

"Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Capture" has two input pins and 6 output pins.
I render "Preview Audio" and "Preview Video", which seems connect fine. But the two input pins are not connected - "Analog Video In" and "Analog Audio In", and therefore there are no TV Tuner Filter, not TV Audio Filter, and no Crossbar filter in the graph. These filters are supposed to be connected automatically when you use FindInterface function to find IAMTVTuner interface. This call somehow fails on Berto's machine.

It does not matter which version of MC you use, you get a total of 30 days of free trial.

I see Yaobing but why not making use of the Hardware MPEG2 Encoder?, becuase the way you doing is not a good idea for recording TV show most due to odd AVI format which the PVR 250/350/USB2 output which not a stardard AVI format.
I have questions for you I have Media Center 10.0.122 Plus install now but for some off wall reson it not importing my MPEG clip.
Also I have one other some problem oh by the way you got A+ rigth off bat it made use of my Xcard when playing DVD how ever that only useful for my Home Made DVD and not the Retail
DVD becuase Sigma Designs have make it so that DirectShow DVD Navigator is compatible with Xcard and I can't find any option to change the decoder over to PowerDVD.

So far I have only attempted to view TV, not record, using the method that is common for all TV devices. The WinTV PVR devices have to receive special treatment. That is why recording has not worked with them.

By the way, thanks for giving the link to your web site. I will surely get much help from the site.

My work in this area is strictly TV tuner devices. Someone else (JohnT I think) worked on DVD. I will pass your questions to the other guys.

I am still working on time-shifting and other stuff. Right now recording only works without still-picture capturing, and without closed-captioning.

Realtime MPEG streaming, well, I have tried, but was having some strange problems. I can not load "InterVideo NonCSS Video Decoder for Hauppauge", nor can I load "ULead MPEG Video Decoder", both came with Hauppauge card. On the other hand, I can load my CyberLink decoder which came with my ATI card, but can not connect them in my graph.

Hi:
I wish I had read this thread before I bought my PVR-350 !!

However, I shoul add that I have gotten to a point whrere MC is able to scan all the available broadcast channels. But when I try to watch them, I get a blank black screen, and no audio. With the card's included software, everythign works swell, so I know it's a software issue.

Does MC plan to have support for the PVR-350 anytime soon? If not for using the h/w encoder, at least for watching TV off the card and recording it to AVI like it does for other cards?
