how do i cycle through mutliple j-pegs in album folder?
« on: May 26, 2004, 07:48:24 am »

i am switching over to putting folder.jpg files in each individual album folder and have got this working fine for
albums by individual artists which i have saved on my hard drive as E:\music store\<Artist>\<Album>.

However when i put a folder.jpg file in a folder for a compilation which is saved as E:\music store\<Album>\<Artist> MC doesn't pick up the cover art unless i save a copy in every artist folder. I want to be able to just put the folder.jpg file in the album (compilation) folder and have it picked up whatever track/artist i am listening to

can someone help me to set this up

thanks

i put the folder.jpg in each album folder. If there is only 1 folder.jpg/album, MC will pick it up automatically when you import.

If there are more than one cover art, u will have to designate which one you want to be displayed as the cover art.

select all album tracks->Right Click->Image->Add from File->(select which image u want)

This assumes that u have the Cover art visualization plugin enabled when in playing now.

Of course u can switch to the images visualization in which case MC will cycle thorugh all the jpgs in that folder.

ok, so i had a bit of brain lock when i wrote this message.  i remember now that if i go down the folder.jpg route that there is no means of getting the image file to travel with the album folder if i move the location of the folder (e.g. from 'temporary music' to 'music store') using 'rename file from properties'

so, now i am planning to save all cover art in a seperate folder and name the files <artist> - <album> so that MC can pick them up.  using this method i am having trouble knowing what to name compilation albums.  if i fill the album artist as va, then i can name the file 'va - <album>, but i wonder if there is any other way of naming a jpg file for a compilation without having to fill in the album artist field.

having said all of this, i'd rather store jpgs in the album folder if you know of a way of moving them with the album folder within MC,

In the rename files from properties dialog check the option for 'Use Assorted on multi- artist albums'.  All compilations will then be stored under '...my music directory\assorted\album'.

Moving albums from one folder to another should be a one off or rare task.  You have 2 options:

Option 1
1. Before the rename do a Locate on disk external to open the explorer window of the start location.
2. Rename files
3. Do a locate on disk external to open the explorer window of the finish location.
4. Drag and drop the images.

Option 2
1. Using windows explorer add the images to playing now* along with the files to be renamed.
2. Use in place editing to tag the images with the album and artist name.
3. Rename the files including the images (this will move them too).
4. Rename the images with a rule like [Name] to put them back to folder.jpg

* Requires you to have enabled shell integration in general options.

Option 1 is quick enough for one off moves.  Option 2 is better for lots of files.

(p.s. I updated my ccf especially for you - check the gallery).

thanks jlee,

so if i have got it right, if i check 'Use Assorted on multi- artist albums', i still need to name my image files 'va - <Album>' but i don't need to specify 'va' under 'artist album'.
is this so?

I always store jpgs with the album folder. If i want to move stuff, just use MC (tree view), drag n drop the album folder where ever u want to put it, all images will travel just fine.

See my other post as we crossed.

Do not use VA for anything!  Let MC automatically sort out what is a single or multi-artist album.  Leave the album artist field blank for multi-artist albums and MC will work it out for itself.

For those few single artist albums that have tracks by more than one artist then you can override the album artist field so MC does not treat it as multi-artist e.g. you have an album by Elton John but just one track is by Elton John & Kiki Dee - you would set the album artist field to Elton John.

If you have a track with Kiki Dee, it would be best to just delete it. ;D

by this do you mean that you use the 'my computer' section of the tree view to drag and drop, or is it possible to do this within the media library/audio tree view.

even having to go to the 'my computer' section seems pretty simple though, so i'll go with that, as i do move folders about quite a lot, and it seems to automatically update the media library without having to import again, and i wouldn't have to use 'rename files from properties

i can see that i don't have to use VA within MC as it automatically puts tracks in a file called 'va' when i check 'Use Assorted on multi- artist albums'.  But if i wanted to have all of my cover art in the same folder i do seem to need to use 'va - <album>' for the name of the image file in order that it will be found by MC

having said this, putting folder.jpgs in each album file now seems simpler as i can use drag and drop under my computer when i need to move folders around

thanks to all for their help

i use VA cos i dont like the (Multiple Artists) at the very top of the column, like to see things alphabetically. I have VA's in many genres too.

JLee's method requires less work as MC does the sorting. Though with mass edits, the work is very little more.

I cant think of any other downsides, are there any with using VA ?

Yep - that sounds like a good call.  I never used it as I saw too many people complain about crashes when dragging and dropping things in My Computer view.  But that was a long time ago before MC10 sorted out all the bugs.

just one more quickie.

when you have a lot of folders in the tree view it is a bit of a drag (pun intended) to drag and drop to another folder.  jlee you mention opening explorer within MC.  how do i do this, and if i do will i be able to drag from the tree view into an explorer window to move my folders.

alternatively when i right click on a folder under 'my computer' in the tree view, is it possible to set this up to send this folder to another specific folder?

thanks

yes since mC only allows u to drag n drop 1 folder at a time only.

So, in place editing of the Filename can be used. The filename also contains the filepath so if u change this path u have in effect moved the file.

Assuming u want to move a bunch of folders from 1 dir to another.

u would then need to do a search & replace of filename path, search for where the filepath is and replace with where u want them to go.

Try with a few tracks first, so u get confident with how MC works before doing it on lots.

i usually only want to drag and drop one folder at a time.  the 'drag' is that if i am dragging and dropping solely in the same tree view, i have to open one directory to find a folder, and that folder may be a long way down in the list of folders under that directory.  this means that when i have found the folder and want to drag it to another directory, this second directory is off the page and it takes a lot of dragging to get there.  so i am wondering if there is a simpler method of dragging and dropping a single folder (e.g. by having a list of directories in the contents pane that i can drag and drop across into, or by having a send to feature that allows you to send a folder to another directory)

the method you suggest is useful for changing the location of multiple folders, but a bit fiddly for changing the location of one

i hope it is clearer what i am trying to get at now

thanks

Drag n drop will work just fine for 1 folder, i have been using it since day 1, so much easier.

i do have a large dir hierarchy as well....just clik/drag up down, mc is real good for this , it scrolls up/down really fast....better than win explorer if u ask me (cept it can do mulitple folders)

Otherwise, organise ur stuff in explorer first and only then import in MC.

Some might say the file location does not matter anymore, since ur organising based on tags and the file location is transparent to using MC. But i'm used to organising at the explorer level already. MC gives me a more convenient way to view it.

i am putting multiple images in specific folders for each album, and naming the main cover of the album 'folder.jpg' so that MC and explorer picks up the correct image to show in the thumbnails.  but when i go to images visualisation page, it doesn't automatically pick up any of the images in the folder and cycle through them as is suggested above.  is there some setting that i have to adjust to enable this to happen?

thanks

ok..i dont name my main cover art as folder.jpg I name it differently.

..and all the jpegs cycle through. I do however designate a cover art for the album. That's for albums that have multiple images. It might be a hassle for u to do that.

Try not using folder.jpg, but designating an image for main cover art ( right click on the album tracks after they have been highlighted->Image->Add file.)

Now go to the images visualization...

is there any difference ?

dont know why it works, what i suggested above seems a bit unecessary given that MC can already pick up folder.jpg as Main cover art. there might be a bug somehwere, did not bother me enough to report it.

ok, so i tried renaming 'folder.jpg' as something else, and then pointing MC to the renamed file using 'add from file', but MC still didn't cycle through images in the album folder when i went to the images visualisation screen.  instead it seems to be cycling through all of the cover art that i have in my various album folders,

i mean the Display Plugin called Image.

When i switch to the Image plugin for an album that has only one cover art image, i get a black screen with the message

'There are no images queued for playback"

If i do this for an album that has more than one imgae in its folder it cycles through them.

One thing u might try is when you play an album, check that the World zone is highlighted, u know the left most icon below the search bar in the top right.

yes the world symbol is highlighted, and i get the message 'there are no images queued for playback' regardless of whether i have one image or multiple images in a given album folder

is there a particular naming scheme that i need to adhere to for jpgs to get this working, or can they be named anything (as long as they are in the right folder)?

i just repeated what i told you and got the same result.

My mistake, i seem to remember it working like that in v9.1.

Don't know why it has changed in 10.

would it be difficult to set this up in MC10 as it would be great to be able to cycle through album art, rather than just have the cover art.

i guess that there could either be a naming scheme for the default cover art folder so that the cover art display cycled through all the images for a given album, e.g. album-artist1, album-artist2, etc..., or the images display could be set to automatically play whatever jpgs are in the album folder for the album being played (if i've got hit_ny right, this was a feature of MC 9.1)

can someone please let me know if there is a particular place for posting requests for features to be included in future updates to MC, or do i just leave them floating around in the ether in the hope that someone out there is listening?
