I think that your computer is probably fast enough for 1xDSD and then some.  Just for fun, you might run a performance monitor and look at the CPU in real time.  See if you see any big spikes near when you hear the dropouts.  I'm guessing it doesn't have to do with your CPU... but that's just me guessing!  :)

Does Windows have a built-in performance monitor or can you recommend one?

Try this fix to get the Aries lightning DS up and running again:

Power down the Aries Mini and launch the App. The App should stay open and leave it open while you power the Aries Mini on. If that all goes well then go into the Aries Mini Lighitng Server settings and "Erase the Library Index" This will get rig of the issue of crashing. You should also clear the cache on that library while your at it. Not you should be able to scan that library again and be back in business.

Unfortunately this won't fix this new problem with MC and the Aries in UPnP mode. I'm having the same problem as a few others have posted here. What's strange is that if I use Bubble UPnP to stream from MC21 to the Aries mini it works perfectly. Just can't use JRemote or gizmo anymore. It just plays one song and stops and the track time just loops b/w 0 and 5 sec. continuously.

SpaceAudio,

You describe exactly the problems I have in UPnP mode with the Mini using JRemote. I will investigate further.

Ug. I just a response from Auralic support saying that this is a problem with the latest version of JRiver and our firmware. They suggest going back a version in MC - which a few here have tried successfully. Unfortunately they go on to say they won't issue a firmware fix since apparently UPnP compatibility is not a priority for them.

I suggest everyone out there start emailing Auralic support and maybe we can get them to issue a fix. I don't see how they can continue to justify advertising compatibility with JRiver.

I was going to make the same point. Their own specifications indicate compatibility with JRiver. That's false advertising if they don't fix it.

How can it only be a problem with JRiver, when the firmware update has frakked up the use of Lightning DS (in Lightning mode) as well? The last time I had problems with the UPnP mode, I got the same answer from Auralic: not a priority, UPnP is not important to us. I reminded them of their advertising the Aries Mini as UPnP compatible, which it clearly isn't, if UPnP doesn't work.

Additionally to mails, those of us on Facebook should comment there about their problems, too.

Could someone please try again testing their Aries using the DMR analyzer from my sig?

Last time we tried it the DMRA could not even find the renderer. Which indicates a problem either with the renderer or the Lan setup. And not a problem with MC. So if you cannot produce a DMRA log, please stop trying to blame MC.

Andrew,

I think people here are explicitly NOT trying to blame MC. Given that the last firmware update, at least for me, has rendered even Auralic's own app basically unusable (and not in UPnP mode), I'm still convinced that the fault lies with Auralic and their lackluster support of UPnP, although they still market their products as compatible.

I have tried the DMR Analyzer. It picks up the Aries just fine. I also made all of the recommended changes to the MC server setting that the analyzer suggested but I still get persistent drop-outs with hi-res files using MC20. And MC21 will not play more than one track at a time.

Andrew,

one question: Does the DMRA produce accurate results when used in a virtual machine running Windows on a Mac? It would be the only way for me to use it.

I never tried that (I don't own a Mac). But it sounds feasible. So perhaps you could try it and give me feedback :)

I've attached the report.

Thank you for the report.

Aah. How to say this politely? As you can see below, the renderer is very sick. The following are FATAL errors:

Quote
RC:GetDeviceCapabilities action=NOT Supported
RC:GetMediaInfo action=NOT Supported
RC:GetPositionInfo action=NOT Supported
RC:GetTransportInfo action=NOT Supported
RC:GetTransportSettings action=NOT Supported
AVT:Event Subscription=Fail
RC:Event Subscription=Fail

And the following are warnings:

Quote
AVT:SetNextAVTransportURI (gapless play)=Feature NOT available
HTTP User Agent (client)=??

=> You definitely need to report this to the manufacturer and ask them to fix their product.

Apologies but I sent you the wrong version of the report. I was testing something last night and had set the Aries to what they call Lightning Server Mode which is the default mode.

In order to work with JRiver the Aries needs to be set to UPnP mode. So I did that this morning and ran the report again. I've attached a revised copy. If there are problems with what is in this report then that should be sent to Auralic.

Sorry for the confusion. I guess that's what happens when you do things at 4am.

The unsupported getDeviceCapabilities is your problem.
Suuport for that is mandatory by the spec and we use it.

I sent the DMR report to the Auralic support guy I've been talking with and he said he would pass the information along to the software guys to look at. Hopefully that leads somewhere.

bob is quite right. At least as far as MC is concerned.

However, (just a side note), although the DMRA does test for GetDeviceCapabilities support, unlike MC, it does not need that call for playing the test track. But nevertheless the test track playing via the DMRA did anyway fail. So there is still something else bad.

To find out more, I would need the HTTP log as well. So could you please run the tests again with HTTP logging enabled? You need to first select the Aries, then Check HTTP logging, and then Select the Aries once more (to force the second selection process transactions to be written to the HTTP log file)..

Here's the report with the HTTP logging. You mentioned that the test track failed. For the record I am hearing the test track playing through my speakers when I run the Analyzer. Not sure if that tells you anything or not.

Here's the report with the HTTP logging.

Unfortunately you uploaded the Renderer Report (again) rather than the HTTP Log file. Can you please try again?

This should be the HTTP log file.

Ok. Thank you for this.

The log file shows a number of issues, listed below, which would cause problems. You would be doing them a favor if you would inform the manufacturer of these findings.

1. It does not support the mandatory GetDeviceCapabilites method
2. It uses Chunked Encoding Note: Chunked Encoding is strictly not illegal; however most CPs and most Renderers do not use it, so this is asking for trouble..

Tell them we'd be happy to license them our UPnP code.

Andrew, where do you think they get it?  Does it say in the log?  Streamunlimited?

I think the idea of JRiver licensing its code to hardware vendors is just brilliant. I think you removed all OS dependencies already so if it is regular C code it should compile on most platforms. Even embedded ones. Although you would probably need to unravel the asynchronous application threading somewhat.

Their HTTP SERVER header says "Posix, ohNet" but apart from that I have no idea where their present code comes from..

I think that some of the implementations came from the Intel reference code.  Ours didn't.  We wrote it from scratch.  John Gateley started it, and when he left, Bob Brose took it over.  Around ten years' of hacking.

It's C++.

I'm in contact with the European Auralic Support. They tried it with an old JRiver Mac version (.24) and said it works (apart from the track time lagging a bit). Using the current version .55 , they can reproduce the problems. Their preliminary conclusion is that something inside JRiver has changed and is causing the problems.

Ummm, Andrew gave a detailed description of the multiple failures of the renderer code. It's pretty amazing that it ever worked.

I know. It sounded a bit like responsibility dumping to me.

Their "preliminary conclusion" is quite wrong. I can categorically state that their implementation is faulty. It would not pass the Upnp certification tests. And nor would it pass the DLNA certification test. And BTW I do not work for JRiver...

I made Auralic support aware of this thread (esp. Andrew's findings about their UPnP code) and suggested that they get in contact with JRiver in order to solve the problem. Given that Auralic still advertises the Mini as compatible with UPnP in general and specifically with JRiver, I think that much can be expected of them.

I get it that the Aries implementation of UPnP seems to be faulty.  I would still love to know what is different about MC 20 versus MC 21 that means one version works with Aries and one does not.

We weren't using getDeviceCapabilities in MC 20

Any chance that is something that can be disabled in MC 21 under DLNA Controller Options?

I would not expect JRiver to make accommodations for another company's bugs..

Even though it seems like they already have with the 2 DLNA controller options?

The controller options affect multiple devices. Working around this bug would only fix one device that I know of.

Looks like multiple devices to me...  ;D

C'mon. Just tell Aries to fix it. It's their bug, and they know it..

Already did that. Haven't heard back from them since. My hopes aren't exactly skyscraper high.

I communicated my frustration on this to Mr. Wang at Auralic just the other day.  This is what he told me: "The JRiver compatibility break out was addressed to us last month and we already started to work out this problem. Hopefully the fix will be included in the next firmware release coming this week."

Sounds promising, fingers crossed.

Having purchased an Aries Mini last week, I will second (or third or fourth) the request to Auralic that this problem be addressed.  However (and admittedly off topic), I don't see myself using JRiver with my Aries Mini unless there is a way to keep my Tidal streaming access.  Any suggestions?

Well, Auralic seems to have a rather loose definition of "this week". 2 weeks have come and gone. Still nothing. Auralic support has even stopped answering my mails. And if I see this correctly, Auralic has deactivated the comment function on their Facebook page (I'm not on Facebook, so maybe the comments just aren't visible for me anymore).

john greenwood,

You can use the Mini with JRiver through JRemote but to use Tidal you would have to use the DSLightning app. I have an Aries and you can add me to the lengthening list of people who are pretty unhappy with Auralic right now.

Just posted a comment on Facebook.  I think it is my first ever. ;D

FWIW - on Facebook, they're hyping LightningDS 4.0.
