UPnP Plugin 1.0.14 for Media Receivers
« on: March 23, 2005, 03:47:08 pm »

MC's UPnP Server is available here:
http://www.jriver.com/~gateley/server_upnp1014.mjp
This is for Media Center 11 only.

Changes and fixes
1) Support for movies/video

--------------------------------------------------------

Instructions for using the UPnP Server
Click on Plug-ins in MC's tree, then on UPnP Server.  On the right side of the UPnP Server page, set "Options" and then click on "Start" to start the server.

If a media receiver is already on the network, and the server is started, the receiver should pick up the server right away. When a media receiver is first turned on, if the server is already started, the receiver should pick up the server. Some receivers may not do both correctly, so try both.

If you cannot see your view scheme, make sure that:
1) The View Scheme is selected to Show in Theater View (under Edit View Scheme).
2) The View Scheme is a child of "Audio", "Images" or "Video".

Options
You can convert files to other formats (such as MP3 or WMA) as they are streamed.  See Options on the UPnP page.

If you have multiple network interfaces on your computer, such as an ethernet and a bluetooth interface, you may need to specify the IP address the UPnP server uses (it will only listen on a single interface, and may choose the one the device is not on).

Unless you are reporting log information here, you can turn off many warings by unchecking "Warn on unrecognized NOTIFY".

Checkboxes are available for four special cases:

1.  "Replace Empty Genre" is required for the NETGEAR MP101, and possibly others. It replaces blank genres with "Unknown". The MP101 will otherwise refuse to play tracks with blank genres.

2.  "Use Flat URLs" is required for the SMC EZ Stream and the Terratec Noxon. These receivers cannot handle complex URLs (internal to the protocol) and this hack changes the URLs to simpler ones.

3. "Include SessionID" must be turned off for Roku. It may be required for others. If you know of a device that requires it, please let me know.

4. "No server header" must be turned on for the D-Link DSM 320. It stops the emission of an HTTP Server header.

A log is generated on the UPnP Server page in MC.  If you have a UPnP device that doesn't work, you can copy the log from MC's UPnP Server (under the tree/plug-ins) and paste it into a thread here. Make sure the "Warn on unrecognized NOTIFY" option is selected before creating the log.

A thread that explains more about UPnP and how MC supports it:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25689.0

Supported UPnP Devices are here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25839.0

The previous thread on the UPnP Server:

Movies now stream! Currently, only WMV and MPG(mpeg2) are supported, and what you can play is limited also by the set top box (for example, the Streamium does  not support WMV format).

Other formats probably won't work yet, but if you post the media type here I can add them.

Enjoy...

Do we need to install the UPnP plugin separately from the latest build of MC11, then, or does that always include whatever the latest is?

The latest build was pulled, but you could use 220 and then install this plug-in.

There is a new problem with the DSM-320 with both videos and audio.  The first few seconds of a song/video repeat.  It will start playing and then after a few seconds, start playing again from the beginning.  This happens every time.

Folder Navigation now works again and the "Media Core" crash seems to be gone!

Still anxiously awaiting WAV file support and the addition of "transport" control functions...

John,

Can you give us some insight into your development plan for the UPnP server?  Or at least a prioritized list of functions you plan to add to the server?

I'm not complaining about the rate of progress being made (updates are quite frequent), just would like to have some idea of how soon I may be able to dump the lousy Philips Media Manager I'm forced to use.

Media Server stops serving when the screen saver kicks in ?

using build 223

MC 11 only shows the songs being requested and then nothing.

MP101 stops playing music and then shows "no server"

Same problem if I switch to another user.

I didn't think this was a problem until using this build but I could be wrong.

Found a problem with streaming internet radio to my Philips SL400i:

Playback stops right after 41 seconds comes up on the time readout and the unit goes back to navigate mode.  I tried this a few times and it's totally repeatable.

The same station plays OK using direct internet streaming as supported by Philips.

Just ran across an odd behavior using the server:

When playing tracks from a playlist, the track that's played by my Philips SL400i does not match what's listed in the playlist.  For example if I select track A, it plays track C or if I select track D it plays track L - I don't see a pattern to the mismatch.

Tracks are played correctly from within MC.

Sounds like your screen saver is disabling your network connections.

John,

I don't see how this could be the cause.  When I tried to see if the behavior was repeatable the screen saver was already active - I have it set for one minute.  Looking at the time stamps in the log, my attempts spanned about two and a half minutes.  If the network connection was disbled why could I re-start the stream at will?

This behavior only occurs with internet streams.  Streaming files from my HD works just fine with your server and others, which tells me that the network connections are stable.

Oops, sorry...

I'm still getting used to the format of this forum.  Most others I've used make it clear which who any particular respose is for as opposed to the flat structure of Interact.  Maybe it's just me, but I find this kind of confusing.  I'll have to pay more attention next time....

My DSM-320 v1.05 can play multiple songs (e.g. an album now) - woohoo.

Minor bug remains - when it starts a song, it plays the first few seconds, then restarts.  The second time the song plays normally.  I have "server header" turned off as instructed.

I am transcoding from WMA lossless to MP3 extreme/fast if that matters.

Fixed in next build:

1) Internet radio now works.
2) DSM-320 no longer repeats the first part of a song
3) Streamium now plays raw WAV files.

Hi John -- still no luck on Roku Soundbridge.

I can connect to the server, but browsing any audio or playlist fails.

Latest plugin causes MediaCore crash on the server side.  If you want more debug data, let me know and I'll post it.

Davis

Hi Davis,

I'll check this out on Monday, but in the meantime, what options are you using?

Also, what version of the Roku?

In UPnP Server Options, with
  • Convert Audio Content checked, if I choose "Windows Media" as the encoder and then go to Advanced settings, I get a crash in media center.exe in enc_wma.dll at offset 000088a2.

I can reproduce this consistently and now that I think about it it's been happening for a few builds now (at least since the first build where you enabled changing UPnP conversion encoder options).

Sorry, John, my MP101 still can't see the radio stations.

I don't know how much of this is down to the plugin/MC and how much is down to the MP101, but here's an example URL:

http://stream5.mystic.be:2730/~~~stream~~~.mp3

This works quite happily within MC, but the MP101 comes up with an error about the content being unavailable... I can't tell if MC is preserving the URL well enough or if it's doing some translation of the URL that then confuses the MP101.

Thanks

Try removing the last forward slash and everything after it.  This worked for me with the .14 release of the server and a Philips Sl400i, but only played for 41 seconds before quitting.

I just figured out what's happening with this one!

I'm using a random sort function in the playlist I was experimenting with.  Apparently the list is randomized on each access by the media player, so you don't get the track that's listed in the tree, but a random one.

I tried removing the random sort order and the operation is as expected.

John,

Is this randomization behavior per design or a bug?

I can see a use for either the current implementation or one that only randomizes once when the playlist is first selected.  Can this behavior be controlled by an existing or added option?

The latest .15 release works GREAT streaming WAV files to my Philips Sl400i!!!  I've been streaming for an hour or two this morning with no problems at all.

And the transport functions work like a charm!  WOO HOOOO!!

Great job John and thank a million!!!

Hopefully you can get the alpha search and shuffle functions working next....

2) DSM-320 no longer repeats the first part of a song

This is still happening for me after installing 11.0.225 (UPnP version reported is 1.0.15).

Hi John, MC version is 11.0.205.  Roku is M1000, Firmware version 2.1.20.
Please update.  We're on build 225 now.  A lot has changed.

Upgraded to 11.0.225 (which seems to included UPnP 1.0.15).  Startup MC11, Check to see UPnP plugin is started (has the same option settings as indicated before).  Go to Roku, connect, and try to browse Audio or Playlist (both fail).  Come back and look at MC11 and it has crashed.  This is the error signature:

AppName: media center.exe    AppVer: 11.0.225.0    ModName: media center.exe
ModVer: 11.0.225.0    Offset: 00328767

The Error Report Contents I cannot copy/paste but the exception information is as follows:

Code: 0xc0000005, which is STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION

There is a text/xml file that lists the modules and their version numbers, etc that are involved in this exception.  If you are interested, I can email  it to you.  Here is system info:

You can check the version on the status window page. Please double check to make sure 1.0.15 is installed. I just tried with my Roku and it's working fine. What options do you have set?

From Status Page:
03/28/05 11:17:28 - JRiver UPnP Server Version 1.0.15 starting...
03/28/05 11:17:29 - Server running on address 192.168.1.2, port 4482
03/28/05 11:17:29 - Running

The only option that is enabled is:

Warn on unrecognized NOTIFY

Does browsing Artist data work for you with the Roku?

I really, really, really want to get this to work. I have had to fall-back on iTunes to play stuff through the Roku, and I hate iTunes.   I am an embedded software developer myself -- I would be happy to dig and capture / debug as much information as you think would be helpful to try to make this work.  Just let me know what information you want, or what scenarios you would like me to try.

Regards,
Davis

Everything's working fine for me.

Can you get a sniff of the IP traffic and send that to me?

Try different artists, see if they all are failing, or only some, or most or...

Also, try converting to MP3 to see if that changes anything (it shouldn't, but we'll see).

This is still happening for me after installing 11.0.225 (UPnP version reported is 1.0.15).

I can't reproduce this. Try several different songs to make sure - does it happen on all of them?

The .15 release won't play internet streams at all.  The player tries and quits in a fraction of a second.

Another one I can't reproduce. I'm wondering now if the new version I put out is somehow messed up.

Please try again when the next build comes out.

I'm using a random sort function in the playlist I was experimenting with.  Apparently the list is randomized on each access by the media player, so you don't get the track that's listed in the tree, but a random one.

This is supposed to be handled correctly. Can you post the smartlist you are using, and the remote control clicks to reproduce it?

Hi Davisford,

I'm falling asleep at the wheel. Try setting the replace empty genre option.

Sorry, should have noticed this sooner...
