PSP Support in MC11
« on: March 24, 2005, 12:01:07 pm »

We had some fun with the PSP's this morning.  We bought 3 when Best Buy opened at 8:00.  Here are some pictures:

In this picture:

I'm the hairless one on the phone.  To the left is John Norris, JRiver's COO, and on the far left is Sindri, my daughter, Carolyn's, boyfriend from Iceland.  She's on the phone in the next picture:

The rest are random gamers.

Sindri ... What a cool name.

I liked the press release.  Very nice copy!  With a little work this could get you some press, since (as you pointed out) the PSP lacks any included software at release.

Great work!

PSP as a remote!
« Reply #9 on: March 25, 2005, 07:22:29 pm »

Guys, that is fantastic.  But how about this for an idea.  Instead of just transfering stuff to the PSP, how about it as the ultimate MC remote control?  It does have wifi built in, resonably priced, and with a great color screen and well layed out controls.  Would beat the pants off of using a PocketPC.

If Sony would help, it would be possible.  I agree that the hardware is there to do that.

PSP for a `ultimate` remote control? Guys have you actually used one? it only has a few buttons. The MP3 playback on it is fiddly as it is. DS would be better with its touch screen but I don`t think that has Wifi

I don't think it's the number of buttons that matters.  You have a great display to browse your library, and then select the album you want to play with one of the few buttons and off you go.

I think it would could work very well indeed !!

A guy I'm sharing the apartment with just bought a PSP here in San Diego. I've had a small mess around with it. I can't even get it to connect to our wireless access point. It seems to be some bug in the wireless implementation, in that it wont connect if we're in wireless "shared" mode.

My initial impression is "the usual SONY story"...flashy looking gizmo...all style and very little substance...had a bit of a look around the web (including the "official" PSP site). Not much useful info there - it reminds me of when the original Playstation came out, and then again when the PS2 came out...funny...even one of the first launch games (the dreadful Ridge Racer) is common to the whole bunch of em...

I'm glad my friend bought one, so I won't be tempted after seeing it...I'll stick to my PocketPC...

I'm curious why you say that about the PSP, it seems to pack a lot of punch for what its intended to do.  Most of what I read says the battery is not long lasting enough and they package a lot into the box that you don't need, driving up the price.

I'm not dying to go by one,  but surprised by your comment.

FWIW, my wife has a small Sony laptop and loves it, especially the wide, bright screen.

Well,

From what I saw, for your $250 or whatever my friend paid for it, you get the PSP, and a UMD disk with a copy of Spiderman2 movie on it. I think it might also have contained the headphones/remote thingy as well.

On the software side it's got virtually nothing; view photos, view video, or listen to music. Like WOW! I can do all this stuff and much more on a PocketPC. It only accepts Sony memory stick (and even that is a "new" format, which is incompatible, without an adapter, with the "old" memory stick).

I've never been a fan of Sony's. I have owned an original Playstation, and I currently own a PS2. All the Sony gear that I look at (and I'm a bit of a gizmo nut), seems to be for the fashion conscious, rather than more functional. And it's not cheap stuff.

The PS2 will be the only piece of Sony gear in my house...

Like I said these are just my impressions, I wouldn't try to dissuade anyone from buying one, merely stating my opinion...

yes, the PS2 is by far their best piece of work.  I am hoping the PSP follows in the footsteps.  I hear ya about the memory sticks.

I did go Sony for a HDTV, they make great TVs IMHO.

Can you browse the web?  Was hoping that would be included for basics... Google and MC Remote Server!  ;-)

Funny, you mention all those features yet fail to discuss it's primary use: as a game player.
All those functions you can do with your PocketPC are just extras on the PSP.  They're nice to have but play a minority role in the grand scheme of things.  This is a game machine pure and simple.  And as a game machine it trounces all over your little PocketPC.
I agree, it wouldn't be worth $250 as an MP3/Photo viewer/Video player but as a portable game machine it's an amazing little device.

Sony have big plans for this device and they will roll out functionality gradually. I have read that, at some point, they will release a free firmware update that includes a Web browser. Wireless Web surfing sounds pretty good to me.
